2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and Sport Turismo: Geneva Auto Show

What Are They?

The 2018 Porsche Panamera range expands with two stunning new models, the Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Sport Turismo.

We're now embarking on the second generation of this flagship car, which has handling talents worthy of the Porsche badge on the hood. The new plug-in hybrid variant benefits from expertise gained in the development of the limited-edition 918 Spyder gas/electric supercar (which cost around $845,000). While other hybrids use electric motors to help with fuel consumption, the main thrust of this driveline is to make this car the most powerful Panamera yet.

The combined system output is a daunting 680 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque. So this luxury car can hook up its standard all-wheel-drive system to sprint from standstill to 60 miles per hour in only 3.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 192 mph. On the other side of this electrified coin, the car can cover up to 31 miles solely on lithium-ion battery power.

The Sport Turismo is a new variation on the Panamera's body shape. It's basically a wagon. The biggest increase in cargo space only adds up to 1.8 cu ft. over the regular Panamera's hatchback design. But there are other advantages.

The Panamera usually seats four, but the Sport Turismo squeezes in a center place in the rear seats. Porsche calls it a "four plus one." The higher roof line also means better headroom for those seated in the back. And at the end of the roof is an innovation -- an adaptive rear spoiler. It has three positions: One reduces aerodynamic drag and helps with fuel consumption, another reduces wind noise when the panoramic sunroof is open and the third produces 110 pounds of downforce at higher speeds. A cargo management system, with a pair of rails set into the loadspace floor, is optional.

Engine choices follow similar lines as the regular car, including a 330-hp turbocharged V6, a hybrid and a 550-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8.

How Much?

The Turbo S E-Hybrid will be available in standard- and long-wheelbase (stretched by 5.9 inches) versions, at $185,450 and $195,850 respectively. An air suspension is standard.

The Sport Turismo will start at $97,250.

When Can You Get Them?

The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and Sport Turismo go on sale in the United States late in 2017.
