2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom: Frankfurt Auto Show

What Is It?

The new 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom is the brand's latest flagship luxury sedan, standing above the Dawn, Ghost and Wraith in its growing lineup. The new Phantom offers typically stately Rolls-Royce styling, along with an amazing list of luxury and comfort features.

On the outside, the Phantom may not look new from a first glance; it shares its profile with the outgoing model. But look closely at the details and you'll see newly shaped front and rear ends, new taillights and headlights and various other small tweaks that give the overall car a more modern look than the outgoing version.

Under the hood, the latest Phantom uses a 6.75-liter V12 that makes 563 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. That's the same displacement as the outgoing model's V12, but Rolls-Royce says it's an all-new engine -- and that the transmission is "satellite aided" to read the road ahead in order to prepare for elevation changes.

Of course, that isn't the only ultra-high-end feature in this car. The new Phantom is also equipped with virtually every single new tech gadget, from a top-down 360 camera to lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, night vision, forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and more. It also touts the usual opulent Rolls-Royce fare, like rear picnic tables coupled with rear whiskey glasses, champagne flutes and a refrigerator.

How Much?

Rolls-Royce hasn't yet announced pricing, but we expect an increase over the current model's base price of around $418,000 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

If you're interested in the Phantom, you probably don't need a "shopping list." Instead, you know exactly what you want, and what you want is the very best luxury sedan on the market -- a car that makes the $363,000 Bentley Mulsanne look plebian. No other vehicle rises to the Phantom's level of luxury and insulation from the outside world -- and if you want the ultimate car, this is it.

Other Cars to Consider

Bentley Mulsanne -- The Mulsanne starts around $363,000, making it a bit more affordable than the Phantom. It's also a little sportier -- though we're not sure if buyers in this segment really care about that.

Mercedes-Maybach S650 -- The Mercedes-Maybach S650 is the ultra-high-end version of the S-Class, with a $170,000 base price. That's a lot for an S-Class, though it doesn't come close to reaching the Phantom's ultra-upscale realm

Rolls-Royce Ghost -- Rolls-Royce's smaller Ghost sedan may not quite have the presence -- or the interior space -- of the larger Phantom, but its $306,000 base price is a lot more affordable than the Phantom's massive price tag.
