2019 Audi RS 5 Sportback: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

Based on the A5/S5 Sportback, the 2019 Audi RS 5 Sportback -- more than anything -- simply turns up the heat. The seventh entry in the Audi Sport lineup, the RS 5 Sportback provides the compelling 5-door coupe styling of the A5/S5, but slams an all-new biturbo engine under the hood. Yikes! The result is a fierce escalation in horsepower, torque and acceleration beyond even the S5 Sportback. The styling screams "performance," and the RS 5 Sportback delivers.

By the numbers, the biturbo is a 2.9-liter twin-turbo capable of generating 444 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. That's 90 more ponies and an additional 74 lb-ft of torque over and above the production of the S5's 3.0-liter V6 turbo. It will send the RS 5 Sportback scampering from a stop to 60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds, according to Audi's stopwatch. An 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission delivers output to all four wheels of the full-time quattro all-wheel-drive system, with a self-locking center differential. A 40/60 front-to-rear torque split provides the illusion you're piloting a rear-wheel-drive car.

A bit wider and slung a little lower than the S5, the RS 5 Sportback gets a revised front suspension for improved steering and handling. To really up the driving dynamics, though, opt for the upgraded suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, which uses adjustable dampers to minimize body roll.

A few styling tweaks round out the differences between the 2019 Audi RS 5 Sportback and its 2018 A5/S5 siblings.

How Much?

Too soon to ask about pricing. Those numbers will come much closer to the RS 5 Sportback's release date.

When Can I Get It?

The second half of 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Straddling the line between coupe and crossover, the RS 5 Sportback delivers heart-pounding performance and everyday utility. Sensational good looks, terrific driving dynamics and a comfy interior offer plenty of temptation. The 5-door configuration within luxury brands is as rare as a sunny winter day in Alaska.

Other Cars to Consider

BMW M4 Coupe -- Surprisingly roomy backseat, robust powertrain and plenty of standard content.

Cadillac ATS-V Coupe -- Available high-performance turbo V6, crisp handling and plenty of standard content.
