What Is It?

The 2019 BMW X4 is all-new for the upcoming model year. This is the counterpart to the X3 premium compact crossover, the difference being that it has more of a fastback line to the roof. Just like the X6 relates to the X5.

Like the X3, this is based on the same platform as the 3 Series, so an involving driving experience is a given. This aspect has been enhanced over the outgoing X4 thanks to a wider track (the distance between the wheels at each axle) for greater stability, a lower center of gravity and what BMW calls the "latest-generation suspension."

Standard equipment levels are high, with navigation (displayed on a 10.3-inch screen), all-wheel drive, advanced safety features and 19-in alloy wheels. Options include a head-up display that's 75 percent larger than its predecessor, a panoramic sunroof and tri-zone automatic climate control.

The second-generation X4 is about three inches longer overall, with most of that going into the wheelbase. A longer wheelbase usually adds to ride comfort. Rear legroom benefits by one inch. Cargo expands, too, from a maximum of 49.4 cu ft. to 50.5.

The new X4 comes in xDrive 30i and M40i versions. The former has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft; the latter deploys a turbocharged inline-6 for 355 hp and 365 lb-ft. This M version also has its own suspension setup and stronger brakes.

On another section of BMW's Geneva show stand is the new 8 Series, represented by the range-topping BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe. The company says the car "embodies a new facet of luxury" and that -- in this instance -- M (which has traditionally been linked to the motorsport/high-performance side of BMW) stands for "more … more of everything."

Except there's a bit less weight. The roof is made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), which reduces bulk and lowers the center of gravity, compared to a conventional steel roof.

The Gran Coupe isn't a traditional coupe; it's a 4-door car. But the 8 Series range will include 2-door versions. BMW hasn't mentioned any engines for this concept, but since the 8 Series is based on the 7 Series, it should be able to accommodate that car's V8.

How Much?

The 2019 BMW X4 xDrive 30i starts at $51,445, and the M40i version is priced from $61,445.

No word on the 8 Series, but a 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe starts at $125,495, so that's the ballpark.

When Can You Get It?

The 2019 X4 goes on sale in July 2018. BMW says a production version of the M8 Gran Coupe will be "presented during the course of 2019." Other cars in the 8 Series range are expected this year.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because …

The X4 is a crossover with a swooping roof and a raised driving position, along with some special BMW magic applied to the chassis and engine. That makes it simultaneously fashionable and fun.

The 8 Series should be as luxurious as the current and wonderful 7 Series, but with a sportier edge. Which sounds great.

Other Cars to Consider

2018 Jaguar F-Pace -- Not particularly coupelike, but a streamlined-looking crossover all the same, with plenty of room plus interest for the enthusiast.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe -- Based on the excellent C-Class. The more-than-warm AMG GLC 43 version is especially tempting.

2018 Porsche Macan -- For a compact crossover with serious driving talents, the Macan is unbeatable. But it is expensive.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe -- A real production version of a high-end machine that could rival the pinnacle of the 8 Series range. Expected early 2019.

Used BMW X6 -- Bigger than the X4 and with the option of a thundering V8 engine.
