2019 Chevy Silverado: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The Chevy Silverado is, of course, Chevrolet's popular full-size pickup truck, and it's been a staple of the "best-selling vehicle" lists for decades. The 2019 Silverado is the latest version of the truck -- a fully redesigned pickup with totally new styling and a lot of other updates under the skin.

The most immediately obvious changes are on the outside of the Silverado. While other truck brands are primarily evolving their designs, with minor updates every few years, the new Silverado is more of a clean-sheet redesign, with a totally new look compared to its predecessor. Notable design traits include bold fenders, contour lines running down the side of the body and a huge new grille.

The Silverado has also been updated inside, though interior changes aren't nearly as dramatic as updates to the truck's exterior -- largely because the outgoing Silverado's interior was relatively new and generally highly regarded by car shoppers and automotive journalists.

Under the hood, the 2019 Silverado retains the outgoing model's 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8 engines, though Chevy says they've been significantly revised, presumably with the goal of improving fuel economy. More importantly, the 2019 Silverado will offer a turbodiesel engine -- a new feature in the light-duty 1500-level truck. The new engine will be a 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder, though GM hasn't confirmed any details beyond that.

Other updates are further under the skin -- the largest of which is the fact that the new Silverado, like the latest F-150, will use aluminum where possible to save weight. According to Chevy, the decision to use aluminum will shave off some 400-plus pounds, which will surely improve the Silverado's gas mileage.

How Much?

Chevy hasn't announced pricing, but we'd expect similar pricing to today's model. The current Silverado starts around $29,300, but prices can increase dramatically due to the dizzying array of trim levels and body styles offered by the truck.

When Can You Get It?

Summer 2018

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

The Chevy Silverado is already a well-regarded full-size truck with excellent capabilities and a trim level that suits just about every need. The 2019 model will surely only improve things, with a slightly more modern interior, updated styling, better gas mileage and the new diesel engine. Undoubtedly, the latest Silverado will also offer some new technology, too, in order to satisfy the gadget-loving truck shopper.

Other Cars to Consider

Ford F-150 -- The Ford F-150 was recently updated, though not fully redesigned like the Ram and Silverado. The latest F-150 is, as always, a highly competent truck -- and just like the Silverado, it boasts a lot of trim levels and versions for all types of shoppers.

Nissan Titan -- The Nissan Titan was recently redesigned to offer new styling and additional capabilities compared to earlier models. Die-hard American-brand truck shoppers are unlikely to consider the Titan, but it's built in the States and is definitely tailored to the tastes of pickup buyers.

Ram 1500 -- The full-size Ram 1500 is also all-new at this year's Detroit Auto Show, and it too features a totally new look and some new equipment.
