2019 Lexus UX: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2019 Lexus UX is an all-new subcompact crossover making its North American debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show. It will be the marque's smallest crossover, slotting in beneath the NX. "We designed the UX to appeal to buyers in their 30s," said the company. Which perhaps explains design touches like the optional leather upholstery stitching inspired by martial arts uniforms.

There are two versions scheduled so far -- the UX 200, using a conventional drivetrain that includes a 168-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, and the UX 250h, powered by a new-generation hybrid system (although it still uses a nickel-metal hydride battery, while other companies are using lithium-ion batteries). Total system output is 176 hp, and all-wheel drive is standard in this model (the UX 200 is front-drive-only). The thing that makes it a new-generation version is a "learning" mode to the linked navigation system that adapts to a driver's habits and regular routes and works to achieve optimal fuel consumption.

Lexus also claims the UX has the lowest center of gravity in its class, which should help with sensations of stability and precision in both versions. So the inclusion of an F Sport trim for both models makes sense. Although they both use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), one feature of the F Sport setup is Active Sound Control, which, says Lexus, "generates the aural effect of up- and down-shifts like those of a geared automatic." Select the Sport S Plus and another function -- Sonic Interaction Design -- makes that sound a little more thrilling.

Regarding equipment, the company hasn't gone into great detail yet, but we can assume there will be comprehensive active safety features and plenty of convenience items on offer.

How Much?

Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date. Somewhere in the region of $35,000 is a good bet.

When Can You Get It?

The 2019 Lexus UX goes on sale December 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

It's a Lexus crossover, which is already a good idea, in a city-friendly size.

Other Cars to Consider

2019 Audi Q3 -- A new generation is expected to arrive next year. Will probably be worth the wait.

2018 BMW X1 -- An excellent choice for those who like some driving talent in their small luxury crossovers.

2018 Jaguar E-PACE -- All-new for 2018. Well-equipped, enjoyable behind the wheel and arguably handsome.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class -- Pleasant enough as a complete package.

Used Lexus RX 350 -- This class of vehicle is still pretty new, and the most recent models have the best tech. But those who want a more spacious Lexus crossover should check out the RX. It's the most popular vehicle of its kind.
