2019 Maserati Levante Trofeo: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

If you're looking for an SUV to take camping, the 2019 Maserati Levante Trofeo isn't it -- unless your idea of camping is a month-long sabbatical at the Jackson Hole Four Seasons. Answering a question that maybe only a handful of billionaires were asking, Maserati delivered this exercise in conspicuous consumption to its stage at the New York Auto Show's Javits Center. Does anyone need such a vehicle? No. Does anyone want such a vehicle? Well, we do.

Stretching his legs in his newfound position running Maserati, Tim Kuniskis, fresh from a stint at Dodge during which he was surrounded by mega-horsepower Hellcats and Demons, introduced the world to one of the fastest Maserati vehicles ever. Able to gallop to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in about 3.7 seconds -- according to Maserati -- and with a top speed north of 186 mph, the Levante Trofeo draws its acceleration from a 590-hp 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, hand-built by Ferrari. Torque is a breath-grabbing 538 lb-ft. Helping propel it up the Four Seasons drive, the Levante Trofeo features Maserati's Q4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

A retuned chassis delivers a 50-50 weight distribution, even with the V8. There are four driving modes, including, for some odd reason, Off-road.

Styling has been tweaked, with a new lower front fascia, a piano-black grille, a freshened rear bumper and 22-in forged aluminum Orione wheels. The Levante Trofeo version Maserati unwrapped in New York was its limited Launch Edition, with a special matte Grigio Lava exterior paint. Maserati is offering it in seven additional colors. There are a few other exterior fineries in addition to special sport seats with contrast stitching and a launch-edition badge in the center console.

How Much?

No pricing yet, but if you have to ask...

When Can I Get It?

Fourth quarter of 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

You don't need a house anyway, right? That's just silly. If you do have the cash, though, you'll have one of the quickest, badest SUVs ever. And you certainly won't see a 2019 Maserati Levante Trofeo parked at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Other Cars to Consider

Porsche Cayenne -- Well-appointed cabin, sports-car handling, comfy ride and strong lineup of engines.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport -- High-performance supercharged V8, luxurious interior and impressive off-road capability.

Audi Q7 -- Exceptional ride quality, available 4-wheel steering, array of driver-assist technology and two robust turbos.
