What Is It?

The 2019 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the super-luxurious version of the already seriously luxurious regular S-Class. It's the stretched limousine, with things like a chilled champagne compartment, 10 inches of extra rear legroom and carpet that almost comes up to your ankles.

The 2019 models receive more visual differentiation from their non-Maybach siblings. This includes a new grille, new 20-inch multispoke alloy wheels and the options of two-tone paintwork and a hand-applied double clear coat for dark colors.

There are two "flavors": the V8-powered S 560 4Matic, with 463 horsepower and all-wheel drive, and the rear-drive S 650, with 621 hp emanating from a smooth and authoritative 6.0-liter V12.

Unless you've been living in the wilderness, you probably already know that the G-Class SUV has finally entered a new generation after staying essentially the same for many years (although its squared-off looks aren't radically different). Actually, you'll no doubt get the news even if you are living in the wilderness, because the G-Class is one of the few vehicles that can tackle those untamed, wide-open spaces. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 is the most extreme version so far, with a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 pushing out a magnificent 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission sends that urge to a standard all-wheel-drive system that comes with no less than three electronic-locking differentials.

Sprinting from standstill to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, the G 63 is quick enough to eclipse a few sports cars -- it's almost a second faster than the outgoing G 63. And just for the extra hot-rod factor, the 2019 G 63 has side exhaust pipes.

An adaptive suspension is standard, while the G63 also offers the option of 22-in alloy wheels. The plush cabin comes with a flat-bottom steering wheel and plenty of scope for personalization.

How Much?

Nothing official yet, but the following prices should be useful indicators: The 2018 Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4Matic starts at $169,595, and the outgoing G 63 is just under $145,000.

When Can You Get It?

The 2019 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class range and the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 are all available later in 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because

Regarding the Maybachs, they're the plushest S-Class cars on the planet and, believe it or not, are quite reasonably priced in the world of mega-limousines.

The G 63 will continue to be something of a cult vehicle, at least in places like southern California. That said, don't underestimate its considerable abilities both on the tarmac and away from it.

Other Cars to Consider

2018 Bentley Flying Spur -- A gorgeously fast, sumptuous and expensive sedan.

2018 Bentley Bentayga -- A gorgeously fast, sumptuous and expensive SUV.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR -- Comes close to the G 63 with 575 hp, and is similarly no slouch when there's no pavement.

Used Rolls-Royce Phantom -- Full of aristocratic British charm, by way of BMW. More visually arresting, if that's your thing.
