2019 Porsche Macan: Paris Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2019 Porsche Macan is the compact crossover for sports car fans. This model year exhibits a revised look, while other changes have also taken place inside and out of sight. It was time for a mid-generation revamp.

In terms of looks, it's one of those situations where it would be good to have the 2018 and 2019 versions parked side by side and then have 15 minutes to peer closely at each one. That said, the refreshed Macan moves a step or two closer in appearance to its sports-car cousins. Porsche has designed new 20-inch and 21-in alloy wheels, and some more exterior paint choices will be available (Crayon, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Mamba Green Metallic and Miami Blue).

The cabin is also updated. The center console now houses a big 11-in infotainment touchscreen, which is the hub for more changes. These include better real-time traffic updates for the navigation system, enhanced voice recognition for vocal commands and the ability to customize menus. There's also an app for recording off-road performance, while a steering wheel featuring an integrated drive-mode selector and a cabin-air-ionization system join the options list. In the advanced driver-aid department, Porsche now offers a Traffic Jam Assist function that takes care of acceleration, braking and small steering adjustments in stop/go conditions.

Porsche hasn't provided any details yet, but it says that the 2019 Macan's engines have received some attention, presumably to make them as efficient as possible. And the company is looking into new designs of tires as part of a broader range of upgrades.

How Much?

No official word yet. Pricing will be given closer to the launch date. For reference, the 2018 Macan range begins at around $49,000.

When Can You Get It?

The 2019 Porsche Macan is expected to go on sale in the United States during the early part of 2019.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

Porsche says it has also improved the Macan's dynamics, working on both ride comfort and handling. Considering it was already the best-driving vehicle in its class, the Macan has just become more compelling. Owning any kind of Porsche is special, even if it's a crossover.

Other Cars to Consider

2019 Acura RDX -- All-new for 2019. A great all-arounder. Offers a lot of equipment for a relatively reasonable price.

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio -- Arguably handsome, undeniably fun for a crossover. The 505-horsepower Quadrifoglio model is awesome, but most mortals will go for the more accessible versions. Which are still good, but not Macan good.

2019 Audi Q5 -- Based on the same foundation as the Macan, but not as sporty. The higher-performance SQ5 could make a more interesting rival against the speedier Macan variants, though.

2019 BMW X3 -- Great engine choices, agile handling, practical-yet-luxurious interior. This is a must-drive.

2019 Jaguar F-PACE -- Stylish, comfortable, spacious and a joy to drive, especially with a 380-hp supercharged V6.

2019 Lexus NX -- Enjoys great build quality, generous amounts of standard equipment and firm resale values. But anyone seeking some driving fun won't find much here.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class -- Roomy, luxurious, well equipped and the range is wide, from pleasant to peppery.

2019 Volvo XC60 -- Has its own distinct style and a lot of standard safety equipment, and it drives exceptionally well.

Used Porsche Cayenne -- For something bigger, a certified pre-owned (CPO) Cayenne would still provide some Porsche-derived thrills.
