2019 Volkswagen Jetta: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

A makeover of Volkswagen's best-selling model, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is larger by every measure, gaining in wheelbase, length, width and height. This translates into a much roomier cabin than the outgoing model. Volkswagen buffed up the exterior styling, resulting in a more streamlined, sophisticated look. LED lighting is standard on every 2019 Jetta.

Offered in S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium grades, every Jetta will employ a 170-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, depending on the trim level. Those with the 8-speed transmission will have engine start/stop to conserve fuel.

The reimagined interior features soft-touch surfaces, new fabric colors for the redesigned seats and optional 10-color wrap-around ambient lighting. Large enough to fit a standard-size iPad, the center console is new and joins a gaggle of available goodies like leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control and heated/ventilated front seats. Every Jetta comes with Driver Personalization for up to four drivers for things like driver-seat memory, temperature and audio settings. Upper grades also have the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display, which drivers may reconfigure to show preferred data.

A suite of available driver-assist/safety technology includes forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, automatic high-beam control, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist.

How Much?

Full pricing is yet to be announced, but the base price of the S will be $18,545 before delivery charge.

When Can You Get It?

Spring of 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because....

If the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is anything like its early predecessors, it will be fun to drive, particularly with the manual transmission. A well-constructed, roomy cabin is ideal for families or active nesters. Generous cargo room is another big plus.
