2019 Volvo XC40 and 2019 Volvo V60: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is an all-new premium compact crossover, and the 2019 Volvo V60 is a new generation of premium midsize wagon. The special thing about this XC40 is that it’s in a newly introduced range-topping Inscription trim.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels (although the options go right up to 21-in wheels), LED headlights, 12.3-in digital driver information display, "Driftwood" cabin accents, leather upholstery, crystal gearshift knob, dual exhaust pipes and its own design of grille.

The current powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, with all-wheel drive as standard. Fuel consumption is estimated at 23 miles per gallon city, 31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined.

A 187-hp front-wheel-drive version of the XC40 arrives in the summer. Plans are also afoot for hybrid and all-electric variants. The XC40 is built in Belgium, while the company has a new plant opening up in South Carolina later this year.

The arguably stunning-looking new V60 is now based on the same platform as the Volvo’s 90-series vehicles. It comes to the United States with a 250-hp T5 front-wheel-drive setup, or a 316-hp T6 powertrain with all-wheel drive as standard. It would’ve been nice to know if the maximum cargo space has grown over the outgoing generation’s 43.8 cu ft., but no doubt all will be revealed in time.

How Much?

Pricing for the 2019 Volvo XC40 Inscription has not been announced yet. The least expensive front-wheel drive 187-hp T4 version will start at $34,195.

Nor has pricing been announced for the 2019 Volvo V60. For a rough idea, the 2018 V60 range starts at $39,245.

When Can You Get It?

The XC40 is available to order now. And, as we mentioned above, the new entry level version launches this summer.

Volvo will release information regarding the availability of the new V60 later this year.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because …

As far as the XC40 goes, small premium crossovers are super-popular right now, and this vehicle has so many great things going for it. Regarding the V60, well, wagons don’t hold the same fascination in car buyers’ minds as crossovers, but they can be more practical and more fun. At least think about it.

Other Cars to Consider

2019 Audi Q3 — A new generation is expected soon, no doubt packed with typical Audi tech and style.

2018 BMW X1 — It seems a BMW is the benchmark in virtually every automobile class. The X1 reinforces that impression.

2019 BMW 3 Series — Assuming there’s going to be a wagon version of the upcoming next-generation 3 Series, this could be about the only rival to the V60.

2018 Jaguar E-Pace — All-new for 2018. Drives, looks and feels special.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class — Stylish, refined and quite well-equipped for the price.

Used Audi Q5 — The Q5 is one size up and one of the big sellers in its class. A new generation has debuted for 2018, so we’re looking at certified pre-owned (CPO) models of the previous generation.
