  • Understated elegance well-suited to Buick drivers

The starting point for the Buick LaCrosse GL Concept is the new-for-2012 LaCrosse, a well-equipped full-size sedan. A loaded LaCrosse packs in many of the safety and convenience features found on high-end luxury cars, including a blind spot warning system, heated and ventilated seats, navigation and an 11-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. So to create the premium luxury GL Concept, Buick already had a firm foundation. Unveiled at the LA Auto Show, the LaCrosse GL Concept is a design study that uses a warm palette and posh materials to create an understated elegance intended to inspire future Buick models.

Buick's design mission includes creating a kind of luxury that drivers find both pampering and approachable. Inspired by heirloom objects, designers used colors like cabernet red, dark cocoa brown and caramel choccachino, warm hues that are rich yet inviting.

Exterior paint is cabernet red. Instead of bright chrome for trim, Buick chose brushed and tinted accents, creating a more subtle look. Evoking the burnished metal of antique jewelry, the trim surrounds the windows, headlights and taillights and dresses up the grille, door handles and deck lid. Satin-finish 20-inch wheels round out the exterior enhancements.

Inside, more brushed and tinted trim adorns the center stack and instrument cluster and enhances wood trim, which has a finish similar to the ombre patina of a vintage Les Paul guitar. Seating, doors and instrument panel are wrapped in dark cocoa brown and caramel choccachino leather. The use of contrasting colors adds interest without being garish. Rich suede is used for the headliner and steering wheel, crowning the luxurious interior with an ultra-premium detail.

Magdalena Kokoszynska, creative designer for the LaCrosse GL Concept, says this study in upscale design showcases the subtle aesthetic Buick drivers prefer.

“Every surface in the interior of the LaCrosse GL has been crafted with the knowledge that Buick customers enjoy the finer things in life, but don’t need to flaunt it,” Kokoszynska said.

Some of the LaCrosse GL Concept's details will likely find their way to production vehicles. Perhaps Buick will even make luxurious suede appointments available. A suede headliner is certainly fine, and without climbing in the car, no one will even know it's there.

What it means to you: Showcasing an aesthetic of understated luxury, the LaCrosse GL Concept is inspiration for future Buick models.
