Introduced alongside the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is a new Smartphone app that will help Focus Electric owners keep tabs on the charging of their all-electric car. The app will allow its users to monitor and control charging times as well as plan trips with the most efficient route. When it launches, MyFord Mobile will be compatible with Android Smartphone’s, iPhone and Blackberry.

Here’s just a few things MyFord Mobile can do: Find charging stations and determine if the car can reach one based on the current battery state, find the car via GPS, receive alerts if the car isn’t charging when it’s scheduled to do so (a power outage for example), create a trip with multiple stops and let the owner know how likely it is they’ll be able to make that trip on just one charge, finally owners can remotely lock or unlocks the car’s doors.

Since the new MyFord Mobile app launched here at CES, we got a chance to see exactly how difficult or easy it is to master. From a user’s perspective, the system’s no more complex that using a typical in-car navigation system. How it works is much more complex, Ford says “Owners will use the Smartphone to communicate with a cloud-based secure server, which stores information provided by an embedded wireless module in Focus Electric. Using a cloud-based architecture ensures users will have up-to-the-minute access to information anywhere both they and the vehicle have connectivity.”

In conjunction with Sync’s traffic, direction and information service (TDI) Focus Electric Owners will be able to find the nearest charging station, find out if they have enough battery power to get there, then with information provided by MapQuest, they can be routed to that charging station via turn by turn navigation.
