Chevrolet COPO Camaro: SEMA Show

What Is It?

The Chevrolet COPO Camaro is a high-performance version of the popular Chevrolet Camaro, designed specifically for drag racing in the NHRA's Stock and Super Stock eliminator classes.

Based on the latest version of the Camaro, the COPO model touts a slight increase in structural rigidity and a 130-pound weight reduction over the outgoing models. It also boasts three engine choices: a supercharged 5.7-liter V8, a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 and a 6.2-liter V8 that's all new for the latest model. Each engine puts power to the ground with a 3-speed automatic transmission.

Just like previous models, the COPO Camaro will offer an extremely limited-production run -- in this case, just 69 units. And just like previous models, the vehicle will boast improved suspension components, upgraded brakes, a solid rear axle, 5-point safety harnesses and a roll cage -- all of which means it won't be legal to drive on the road.

And what about that unusual name? The COPO moniker recalls late-1960s Camaro models dubbed COPO for "Central Office Production Order" -- essentially the name of Chevrolet's special-order system that dealers and customers used to build factory drag-racing Camaro models many years ago.

How Much?

Although Chevrolet hasn't announced pricing, it's safe to say the least expensive versions of the COPO Camaro will likely start somewhere in the $90,000 range -- if not more.

When Can You Get It?

Sometime next year -- if you're lucky enough to be selected. To sign up, you have to register your interest on Chevy's website and hope that you're one of the lucky few chosen for the opportunity to purchase the car.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Few cars offer the out-of-the-box drag-racing potential of the COPO Camaro. In fact, we'd go so far as to say that no other car offers this vehicle's drag-racing capabilities directly from the factory. So if you're looking for the ultimate high-performance drag car that doesn't need a single modification to go fast in a straight line, there's no doubt that this vehicle is the one.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 -- The high-performance Camaro ZL1 offers a huge engine, big power and an amazing driving experience, but it doesn't have the COPO Camaro's purpose-built drag-racing capabilities.

2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 -- For similar money to the Camaro, the Corvette Z06 offers street-legal thrills -- and impressive handling to boot.

2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat -- The Hellcat is probably the closest you can get to a COPO Camaro for the street, thanks to a powerful V8 that offers 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.
