Dodge Challenger ACR - SEMA Auto Show

by Ross Darby November 2011

If you've seen the video of Dodge's Viper ACR making its record-breaking run around the Nurburgring, you know just how much that car blurs the line between production car and full-blown race car. Now the ACR nameplate graces the back of a Challenger, and while not nearly as race-prepped as the Viper version, the car still has all the right ingredients.

Chief among them is actually the lack of ingredients, as any racer knows, "stuff" translates directly to "weight," so the Challenger SRT8 ACR got rid of as much stuff as possible. One look at the interior, and it's easy to see this car is a stripper, leaving behind little more than carbon fiber door cards, race buckets up front, a roll cage, and a fire extinguisher. Carbon fiber is carried over to the exterior as well, replacing the heavy metal rear deck lid and hood for even more weight savings.

While the engine is the exact same found in any SRT8, many components have been put in place to maximize the mill's output. A short-throw shifter ensures gearshifts happen quickly and smoothly, while a cat-back exhaust and custom headers evacuate combustion gases equally as quickly. Goodyear F1 Supercar performance tires get the power to the asphalt, while a full Mopar coilover suspension makes sure those tires keep contact with the tarmac as much as possible.

Visually, the SRT8 ACR is as striking as its serpentine ancestor, featuring a bright white body, with a red stripe offsetting the naked carbon fiber hood and deck lid. The red is extended to the side mirrors and brake calipers, as well as the ACR badging on the fenders.

While we don't think it will be threatening the hardcore Viper ACR's lap times, it certainly will turn heads just as quick as that car did. We can't wait to see one in person.
