Ford Motor Co. unveiled a new small crossover concept here at the North American International Auto Show – the Vertrek.

The Vertrek is a sleek-looking compact utility, lower slung than the models industry experts predict it will replace- the Ford Escape in the U.S. as well as and S-Max and Kuga in Europe.

The Vertrek Concept “is a not-so-subtle hint as to where we are going” in the segment, said J Mays, group vice president of design and chief creative officer. The concept offers more cargo room than the small Ford Escape SUV and Kuga. It has a slicker, more aerodynamic shape and a lower trapezoid grille, first seen on Euro models but appearing on the Fiesta here.

“Inside is a technology showcase,” said Mays, featuring all the goodies of the My Ford Touch telematics system on a high-mounted display.

We’ll have to wait and see, but upcoming auto shows may set the stage for the new Escape and see this concept come completely to life before the end of the year.
