Genesis New York Concept: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The Genesis New York Concept is, in its most basic form, a sport sedan with a hybrid drivetrain. But concepts are always much more than elementary. Its styling reflects an approach that Genesis (the newest luxury car brand on the block) calls "Athletic Elegance."

The long nose houses a hybrid drivetrain that generates 242 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, which is not much power for a luxury car. Genesis makes no special mention of any lightweight body materials. There's no doubt that a production version could have more muscle.

The interior provides plush accommodation for four in individually sculpted seats, which are surrounded by leather and suede, along with accents of aluminum and copper-toned mesh. The center console is dominated by a huge 21-inch, high-resolution curved display (made by LG) for the infotainment system that responds to touch pads, which recognize handwriting and gesture controls. This concave screen is contrasted with a convex instrument cluster.

Will They Ever Sell It?

As Genesis has recently re-invented itself, it needs to have fresh and compelling products. So although Genesis says what companies always say about concepts -- "it hints at future design direction" -- it wouldn't be a bad idea to do something bold like this. They should at least throw in a turbocharged V6, though. If this model is going to compete in such an upscale environment, it's going to need power.

Why It's Important

Now that this brand has spun off from Hyundai, the Genesis New York Concept goes one step further in solidifying itself in the minds of buyers as a distinct luxury marque, just like Lexus and Toyota or Acura and Honda. And it's always interesting to see the kind of new in-car technology that's coming up.
