Honda Civic Type R Concept: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The Honda Civic Type R Concept previews a high-performance Civic that should make its way to Europe and Asia in the next year or two. Like previous Civic Type R models, it boasts a long list of upgrades, ranging from stylistic changes to a more powerful engine.

On the outside, the Civic Type R retains much of the shape of Honda's regular Civic hatchback -- a model that hasn't been sold in the U.S. for nearly a decade. But it adds numerous sporty upgrades, ranging from larger wheels and a body kit to a more aggressive front fascia, a huge rear spoiler and massive quad exhausts in back.

But the biggest news is under the hood, where Honda has fitted a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes more than 280 horsepower. The new powerplant is a major step up from traditional Civic models, which use 4-cylinder engines and rarely top 150 hp in Europe and Asia.

Will They Ever Sell It?

There's no doubt that Honda will offer a Civic Type R again. After all, the brand has sold Civic Type R models for years, each offering performance and stylistic upgrades over the brand's standard Civic models. Unfortunately, each past Civic Type R has been kept out of the U.S., and we expect that the upcoming model will meet the same fate.

Why It's Important

The Honda Civic Type R Concept may not be coming to the States, but it still demonstrates Honda's commitment to performance and driving enjoyment. That can sometimes get lost with a car company whose primary market is shoppers interested in a vehicle that takes them from point A to point B, so we're happy to see that Honda still has horsepower on the brain. Still, we'd like to see the Civic Type R in America, especially as the hot hatch segment heats up with competitors such as the Ford Focus ST and Hyundai Veloster Turbo.
