What Is It?
Officially, the Infiniti QX30 Concept only shows off a potential future design from the automaker, but in reality, the QX30 Concept previews an upcoming compact crossover that will likely reach dealers sometime next year.
As you might expect given the car’s name, the QX30’s size slots below Infiniti’s larger models (the QX50, QX60, QX70 and QX80), and it’s Infiniti’s first model to join the fast-growing compact-luxury-crossover segment. Among its rivals will be the Mercedes GLA, the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3.
On the outside, the QX30 Concept offers bold, exciting styling like some of its newer rivals, such as the Lexus NX. We’re not quite sure how much of this styling will make it to production, but we’d love to see those sweeping curves, narrow lights and eye-grabbing creases on a production-ready vehicle.
The QX30 Concept looks even more futuristic on the inside, boasting unique lines and high-end materials just about everywhere you turn. While the production-ready QX30 will likely offer an impressive interior, we’d be surprised if much of the concept car’s striking cabin makes it to production.
Under the hood, the QX30 Concept boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. That’s a decidedly production-ready powertrain, further suggesting that this car is closer to going on sale than the typical concept vehicle.
Will They Ever Sell It?
Although we suspect that the Infiniti QX30 will see production sometime next year, it probably won’t look exactly like this. Expect similar proportions, a similar engine and a few identical design cues, but otherwise, we think the QX30 will offer a more toned-down look when it finally reaches dealers.
Why It’s Important
The Infiniti lineup has been surprisingly stagnant in recent years, with few new models and updated products. The QX30 will change that while also sending Infiniti into a hot new segment that’s becoming dramatically popular in the luxury-car world. Although we’d hardly say that the QX30 is a make-or-break car for Infiniti, it’s certainly an important vehicle for the luxury brand.
