Jaguar I-Pace Concept: Frankfurt Auto Show

What Is It?

In truth, the Jaguar I-Pace Concept is more than an idea. It's close to a real model. What will eventually reach the dealerships is a small premium crossover running on battery power only. This is Jaguar's first-ever production electric vehicle (EV).

That in itself is pretty exciting, but the company has pulled out all the marketing stops and established a new one-model racing series called the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy. A racing version of the I-Pace is on display at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The series will visit several major cities around the world as a support race to the Formula E events (open-wheel electric race cars -- another form of motorsport in which Jaguar participates and which is growing in popularity and impact). So perhaps we'll see if the old adage of "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" still rings true in this modern, post-gasoline age.

Either way, it should be a thrill, since the I-Pace has twin electric motors for a total of 400 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It will zip from a standstill to 60 mph in four seconds. Maximum range is 220 miles.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Yes. A street-legal version of the Jaguar I-Pace Concept is set to go on sale late in 2018.

Why It's Important

Electric cars, whether using a battery only or augmented by a small combustion engine, seem to be the direction almost every auto manufacturer is headed. It's logical Jaguar would have its own candidates, having already stated that all of its new vehicles from 2020 will have some element of electrification. This edict applies to Land Rover vehicles as well.
