There’s a 22-mile route in the Sierra Nevada called the Rubicon Trail, with granite slabs, boulders and a waterfall to negotiate. It’s paradise for off-roading types. Jeep does some of its testing there. Over time, the two names have forged a connection; one brings to mind the other.

So when Jeep attends an auto show, the company likes to bring something of the Rubicon trail along with it. Like the “Jeep Rocks & Road Tour” which is one of the main attractions at the San Diego auto show.

Although it is contained beneath the roof of the San Diego Convention Center, it’s essentially an off-road course designed to demonstrate the abilities of Jeep vehicles beyond the pavement. “We created the ‘Jeep Rocks & Road Tour’ to provide our current and potential customers with an adventurous experience,” said Jeep president and CEO, Mike Manley. “This tour provides an ideal venue to experience the countless features and capability offered in the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee and the iconic Wrangler.”

Visitors can ride along with trained instructors, who explain how to navigate challenges like steep grades, rocky trails and log crossings. These obstacles test each Jeep’s suspension, as well as axle articulation, grip, and traction. At the top of the ramp, the vehicles are 20 feet off the ground.

Jeep is also mindful of keeping the really young ones interested, so it has “Power Wheels” mini vehicles for them to drive. And to engender that go-anywhere outdoors-type mentality that is part and parcel of the brand, the more adventurous kids even have a rock wall to climb.
