Lamborghini Huracan Performante: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The Lamborghini Huracan Performante is a high-performance version of the desirable Lamborghini Huracan, a midengine exotic car with V10 power and bold, wedge-shaped styling. Despite similar styling to the standard Huracan, the Performante offers serious updates -- some on the outside and some under the skin.

The most obvious change to the Performante compared to the standard Huracan is the rear wing, which stands hugely over the back of the car in high-performance Lamborghini tradition. The Huracan also touts larger exhausts, additional carbon-fiber pieces, unique wheels and electronic flaps throughout the exterior designed to constantly adjust aerodynamics. Cosmetic changes to the interior are headlined by a lot more carbon fiber than the standard Huracan.

But there are a lot of changes under the skin, too. The Huracan Performante touts an additional 38 horsepower over the standard model, bringing the total to 640. It also offers an extra 30 lb-ft of torque for 443 lb-ft total. And then there's the weight savings: Various changes (including all those carbon-fiber pieces) have helped the Huracan Performante shed 88 pounds compared to the standard model.

The result of all this, of course, is better handling and better performance -- enough that Lamborghini has already claimed the Huracan Performante has set the new lap record for a production car at Germany's famed Nurburgring racetrack.

How Much?

Prices start around $275,000 -- an increase of around $70,000 compared to a base-level Huracan.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

If you're putting together a "shopping list" of the most impressive exotic cars on the market, the Huracan Performante certainly deserves a spot. While its Nurburgring time has been questioned, there's no doubt it's amazingly fast -- especially if the standard Huracan is anything to go by. Although the Ferrari 488 one-upped the Huracan when it came out recently, the Performante model suggests Lamborghini might be ready to reclaim the exotic-car crown.

Other Cars to Consider

Acura NSX -- The new NSX is undoubtedly slower than the Huracan Performante -- but it's also a lot cheaper. And it still touts the same level of bold, look-at-me styling you'd expect from an exotic car.

Audi R8 -- The latest Audi R8 offers V10 power, just like the Huracan. While its styling doesn't quite stand out like the design of the Huracan (or the Performante), the R8 still offers incredible performance for people who want to be a little more subtle on the road.

Ferrari 488 GTB -- Although the 488 GTB isn't a "high-performance" model like the Performante, it's still amazingly fast -- and wildly exciting. Handling is precise, steering is secure and performance is mind-blowing.

Used Lamborghini Aventador -- Although Lamborghini's flagship model, the V12-powered Aventador, is still pretty pricey, early ones are starting to lose value -- making them appealing to any shopper interested in a boldly styled Lamborghini with serious performance.
