Lincoln Navigator Concept: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The Lincoln Navigator concept vehicle showcases Lincoln's newfound imagination. Starting with the obvious, a set of massive gull wing doors grant access to a lavish interior, aided by a set of 3-tier retractable side steps. The grille and wheels draw heavily from the new Continental sedan, while the interior is filled with a blend of cutting-edge technology and retro-themed styling cues, such as a steering wheel reminiscent of the rim blow wheel found inside the 1969 Lincoln Mark III. Modern touches include huge touchscreens affixed to the backs of the four, 30-way adjustable seats. The screens are Wi-Fi-ready, allowing passengers to play games or stream movies individually via their cell phones.

Powering the Lincoln Navigator concept is a 400-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, while underneath a variable adjustable suspension is equipped to deal with all manner of road surfaces and weather conditions. Of course, the entire vehicle is done in various shades of storm blue and violet, a theme Lincoln seems to enjoy repeating. Around back, a custom wardrobe system fills the cargo bay, complete with sorting areas for sunglasses, shoes, toiletries and a change of clothes.

Will They Ever Sell It?

No. Not even close. But, it's a very good bet we'll see some of the concept's design language and technology on the next generation Navigator. Lincoln President Kumar Galhotra pointed out that where the Cadillac Escalade looks hard and aggressive, Lincoln wants the Navigator to exude a sense of "quiet luxury -- vehicles and experiences that are elegant, effortlessly powerful and serene."

Why It's Important

Lincoln has fallen far behind rivals such as Cadillac, Infiniti and Land Rover with their full-size Navigator luxury SUV. The company needs more than just a mild refresh to save its largest production vehicle: it needs a complete rethink top to bottom. We think this concept shows excellent potential to lead Lincoln out of the dark. Time will tell if the Navigator concept is a foreshadowing of things to come, or just another cruel tease.
