Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme Concept: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme concept is an enormous pickup-truck version of the popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo van. But it isn't just that: It's also a crazy behemoth, touting a bright color scheme and some custom modifications that help it stand out even more than a pickup-based cargo van already would.

On the outside, the Sprinter Extreme concept is wrapped in an eye-catching bright green, with simulated dirt that's intended to indicate its potential off-road prowess. It also offers a lifted suspension, unique wheels and a custom roof rack with six huge spotlights from Mercedes-Benz customizer RENNtech. The truck also shows off aggressive off-road tires and chrome exhaust stands on either side of the cab.

The truck's most important upgrade, however, is in back. It loses its usual cargo-van rear end in place of a tipper bed from truck modifier ScattoMaax -- a feature that's actually available to Sprinter customers in the United States through Innovative Vehicle Solutions. The result is that the truck can tip its 5,200-lb payload straight back or to either side.

Will They Ever Sell It?

We think the Sprinter Extreme concept is awesome, but it will never make production in this form.

Why It's Important

Although the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme concept won't see production, the truck's attention-grabbing arrival in Chicago is important, as it shows off the capabilities of the Sprinter lineup. While you probably won't wrap your Sprinter in a bright-green paint scheme and equip it with off-road tires, you may be interested in a tipper bed -- and the Sprinter is indeed available with one. Although the Extreme concept might be based on a playful design, the brightly colored truck's overall message is that Sprinter is more than just a typical cargo van.
