Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept: Tokyo Auto Show

What Is It?

The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept is an all-electric, all-wheel-drive crossover with artificial intelligence. It's pretty cool and a long way from the i-MiEV subcompact hatchback that Mitsubishi is selling right now.

The AI aspect includes a feature that monitors a driver's approach, then offers ways to optimize economy and safety on a large, flat screen instead of a conventional dashboard. It can also take care of things like the headlights and wipers.

Mitsubishi says that one motor drives the front axle, while two are deployed for the rear wheels. But the company makes no mention of power (apart from saying "high torque"), range, performance or charge times.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Mitsubishi has been through some tough times, but is now part of the Nissan/Renault conglomerate. This is good news, because there might finally be some meaningful investment to back up what is an admirably dramatic design approach. But although the e-Evolution concept points to a styling direction for production vehicles (which Mitsubishi describes as "robust and ingenious"), this actual crossover may never be anything more than a show car.

Why It's Important

The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept reminds the world that the company is still around and looking to the future, despite having vehicles in dealerships that have been in production for years. It also underlines the general trend toward more electric vehicles. Mitsubishi calls the e-Evolution a "technical prototype" to display the kind of ideas and technology its engineers are working with. This also includes an instrument panel that seems to float in front of the driver.
