Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover aimed squarely at small SUV all-stars like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. It revives Mitsubishi's famous "Eclipse" name, which was last used in 2012 -- but unlike the old Eclipse, the new model is no sporty coupe or convertible.

On the outside, the Eclipse Cross generally features a typical small crossover look -- with a few notable exceptions. The rear end, for instance, slopes down a little more than most crossovers, creating a divided rear window and oddly-shaped brake lights. Also, the Eclipse Cross's front-end styling is especially bold for a small SUV.

Inside, the Eclipse Cross seems to boast small SUV standard fare, including a touchpad controller for the infotainment system. Mitsubishi also says the upcoming crossover will feature the latest in safety technology -- like automatic forward collision braking -- along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Under the hood, the Eclipse Cross will use a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine -- though Mitsubishi hasn't yet announced horsepower or performance numbers. European market models will also tout a 2.2-liter turbodiesel variant, but we don't expect to see that powertrain reach North America.

How Much?

Mitsubishi hasn't yet announced pricing -- but it'll likely be in the mid-$20,000 range, in order to directly compete with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

When Can You Get It?

Late 2017 or early 2018

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Although the Mitsubishi brand has languished recently, the Eclipse Cross may finally represent the automaker's attempt to go head-to-head with popular small crossovers from Honda, Toyota, Ford, Subaru and more. We're not yet sure how the Eclipse Cross will be priced, or even exactly how big it is, but we're eager to check out the compact crossover and see if it has what it takes to merit consideration in one of the most competitive segments in the car industry.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Ford Escape -- The recently updated Ford Escape is an excellent choice for shoppers interested in strong gas mileage and modern technology.

2017 Honda CR-V -- The compact Honda CR-V is a mainstay among small SUVs, featuring a wide-ranging lineup that goes from "affordable and basic" to "luxurious and well-equipped."

2017 Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 is among the largest small SUVs -- and it now boasts a fuel-efficient hybrid model, unlike its rivals.

Used Nissan Pathfinder -- If you like the idea of an SUV but you need more space for your family, you may want to consider a larger model -- like the excellent Nissan Pathfinder. Prices are higher, however, so you might have to look at used or certified pre-owned versions.
