  • Will be the exclusive taxi of New York City until 2023
  • Designed with taxi drivers and passengers strictly in mind
  • First taxi cab to undergo crash testing with all taxi equipment in place

Back in 2007, New York City announced that it was looking for a replacement for its iconic yellow taxi. After an onslaught of courting from various car manufacturers and designers, the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission decided upon Nissan's NV200 as the best candidate of a taxi for the next decade. Since then, Nissan has been mum about its plans for the NV200 - until today, that is.

Debuting at the New York Auto Show this week, the NV200 takes the shape of a full-sized van, versus the old mainstay of a Lincoln sedan. The biggest difference of the NV200 over the old cab is that it's been designed to be a cab from the beginning, rather than starting life as said sedan and ending up as the same with a thick piece of Plexiglas in the middle. The biggest benefit, according to Nissan, is that the car's safety has also been designed with its chauffeuring intentions in mind. To that end, the NV200 features front- and rear-seat occupant curtain airbags, as well as seat-mounted airbags for the front row.

In terms of amenities, the NV200 provides its technology-clad passengers with one 12-volt power outlet and two USB ports for juicing up on the go. A transparent roof allows fare payers the ability to take in all the vertical sights New York has to offer, and an active carbon-lined headliner surrounds it in order to keep odors down from who-knows-what. Similarly, the passenger seats are antimicrobial, and breathable, to help prevent the spread of illness through its varied passengers.

What it means to you: If you've ever taken a big-city taxi before, it's fairly obvious that the car wasn't designed specifically for that purpose. Nissan's NV200 changes that fact, in the home of the taxi cab itself.
