Nissan Sway Concept: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The Nissan Sway Concept is a futuristic preview of Nissan's upcoming design language and possibly an upcoming Nissan hatchback down the road. Featuring swoopy lines, a steeply raked windshield and an unusual glasshouse that resembles the brand's new Murano crossover, the Sway Concept is sure to turns heads at Geneva.

Things are even more futuristic on the inside. The Sway Concept offers a highly modern interior with a series of unique lines, unusual materials and cutting-edge touches. According to Nissan, the interior was inspired by industrial architecture; a series of aluminum accents combines with the brand's gliding-wing dashboard, a staple of recent Nissan concept cars.

Unfortunately, Nissan has not yet announced what's under the Sway's hood, or any other details about the hatchback. Instead, the automaker seems to view this model purely as a design exercise. And that's a shame, because it's one of the most handsome hatchbacks we've seen in a while.

Will They Ever Sell It?

We find it hard to believe that the Nissan Sway Concept will ever reach production in this form or any other. While the Sway boasts bold styling that we'd love to see on a mass-produced hatchback, the reality is that Nissan mainly focuses on value-priced models, prioritizing features, equipment and engine performance over styling and presence. So we'd take this car as a design study, and nothing more. With that said, we wouldn't be surprised to see a few key elements from its styling show up in future Nissan models.

Why It's Important

The Sway Concept proves that Nissan has its eye on style and design, which is something the relatively pragmatic automaker has been accused of lacking in recent years. Boasting a bold look, an aggressive front end, a sweeping windshield and that excellent glasshouse, the Sway Concept reminds Geneva Auto Show attendees that Nissan isn't a brand to be forgotten if appearance is a priority.
