What Is It?
The 2014 Porsche Macan is a sporty luxury SUV that slots beneath the popular Cayenne in Porsche’s lineup. It includes four doors, plus a rear lift gate and standard all-wheel drive — much like rivals such as the BMW X3 and Range Rover Evoque.
Both inside and out, the styling roughly mimics the Cayenne. That means curved exterior lines, a tapered roofline, a wide track and front-mounted LED lights. Inside, expect a center-mounted screen for Porsche’s infotainment system, along with a slanted center console with controls that are easily within a driver’s reach.
The first Macan models will come in two flavors. There’s a Macan S, with a 340-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 capable of propelling the SUV to 60 miles per hour in just 5.2 seconds. And then there’s a Macan Turbo, which uses a turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 that produces a whopping 400 hp and 0-to-60 times closer to 4.6 seconds. Both models use Porsche’s 7-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission.
Porsche hasn’t announced pricing. Expect the Macan S to start in the low- to mid-$50,000 range, while the Turbo will include a substantial premium. We’d also expect to see a base-level Macan eventually debut with pricing that starts in the mid-$40,000 range.
When Can You Get It?

It’s a Porsche SUV with even more sport than the already enjoyable Cayenne. While we haven’t yet driven the Macan, it’s hard to imagine the SUV will offer anything less than best-in-class fun, thanks to its powerful engine options and famed Porsche handling. And we’re excited to try out the dual-clutch PDK in an SUV, since the Cayenne still uses a traditional automatic.
Other Cars to Consider
Audi Q5 — If you’re looking for an SUV sized similarly to the Macan but without the Porsche’s high-dollar price tag or sporty character, try the Q5. It’s luxurious and quick but far more affordable.
BMW X3 — While the X3 doesn’t reach the Macan’s horsepower levels, it’s still a compact SUV built with sport in mind. It’s also far more affordable than the Macan.
Range Rover Evoque — The Evoque can’t boast the Macan’s excellent performance, but it wins big for style, carrying a bold look and the cachet of the Range Rover nameplate.
Used Porsche Cayenne — If the Porsche Macan is too small, consider a 1- or 2-year-old Cayenne. The Cayenne is a little bigger, and it offers the same Porsche brand cachet. Plus, a used Cayenne will cost about the same as a new Macan.
