Porsche Mission E Concept: Frankfurt Auto Show

What Is It?

The Porsche Mission E concept is a fully electric luxury sedan concept car that's making its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It offers futuristic styling, a futuristic interior and -- most importantly -- an amazing 311-mile electric range, which makes it a close competitor of the popular Tesla Model S.

On the outside, the Mission E concept looks like nothing Porsche has ever created before, with flowing, futuristic lines, huge wheels, a gigantic taillight that stretches across the car's whole rear end and a low-slung profile. Although the Mission E is a 4-door sedan, its back doors are rear-hinged "suicide doors," which means there's no B-pillar. Things are just as futuristic inside, where switches and buttons are replaced by screens, a simple dashboard layout and a holographic display that features a series of apps and extends into the dashboard's front passenger side.

More important, however, is what's under the hood. According to Porsche, the Mission E concept boasts a fully electric motor that makes over 600 horsepower. The powertrain, which is mated to a standard all-wheel-drive system, can be charged in as little as 15 minutes -- assuming that you can find an 800-volt power source. Going from 0 to 60 miles per hour takes a lightning-quick 3.5 seconds or less, which is on par with high-performance versions of the Tesla Model S.

Will They Ever Sell It?

We sure hope so. While we suspect that the sedan won't make production in its current highly stylized form, we'd love to see something similar from Porsche in the next few years.

Why It's Important

The highly popular Tesla Model S turned the luxury sedan world on its head when it came out a few years ago and offered a fully electric range of more than 300 miles. Since then, no automaker has been able to top -- or come close to -- the Model S's figures.

Enter the Porsche Mission E, which boasts thrilling performance, muscular hp numbers and a similar range to the Tesla Model S -- all with the familiar Porsche brand name on the hood. While we'd be surprised to see the Mission E reach production in its current form, we'd love to see this powertrain find its way into a production-ready electric vehicle that will take on the Model S.
