RAM 2500 Off-Road Pack: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The RAM 2500 is gaining an off-road-oriented variant at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Dubbed the Off-Road package, the new model touts a few overland-friendly features, following in the footsteps of rivals such as the Ford Super Duty FX4 and the Chevy Silverado HD Z71.

Like those models, the RAM's Off-Road package offers a few minor updates under the skin. Chief among them is new Bilstein off-road shocks, though the truck is also adding a limited-slip differential, slightly brawnier tires and additional underbody protection. RAM 2500 models with the Off-Road package will also include a few exterior emblems identifying them as such.

As for the rest of the truck, it's a lot like the standard heavy-duty, which means that you'll get your choice of body style, cab configuration (Crew or Mega), gasoline or diesel engine, and even trim level. Not surprisingly, however, the package is only offered on 4-wheel-drive trucks.

How Much?

Although RAM hasn't announced pricing, we expect the truck will only require a slight premium -- likely less than $1,000 -- over other versions of the heavy-duty pickup.

When Can You Get It?

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

If you feel like your regular heavy-duty pickup can't quite tackle the terrain, you might want to consider the RAM 2500's new Off-Road package. While it hardly offers the capabilities of a Jeep Wrangler or even a Ford F-150 Raptor, its increased ride height and improved underbody protection will help truck owners who find themselves traversing difficult terrain just as often as they tow a heavy trailer.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD Z71 -- The heavy-duty Silverado HD also offers an off-road equipment group, which features many of the same items in the RAM's new package.

2016 Ford F-150 Raptor -- Although the Ford Raptor is a light-duty truck, it's capable of some serious off-roading. If you need more capability than the RAM 2500 Off-Road package can deliver, you may want to consider a Raptor.

2016 Ford Super Duty FX4 -- The F-Series Super Duty also offers an off-road package, dubbed FX4, with similar equipment to the RAM's new package. Like the RAM, the F-Series Super Duty FX4 is offered with a wide range of configurations and trim levels.
