Subaru Ascent Concept: New York Auto Show

 What Is It?

The Subaru Ascent Concept may not officially be a production vehicle, but it provides a pretty accurate glimpse of what we can expect from the brand's future three-row, eight-passenger SUV. Make no mistake, a vehicle that looks almost the same as this will be named the Ascent and go on sale in 2018.

Subaru has been without a three-row crossover since it discontinued the Tribeca, which itself was never especially competitive. Brand loyalists have long yearned for a model bigger than the Outback, and the Ascent should provide just that. It looks quite similar to the Outback, but its dimensions have been pumped up considerably. This translates into a particularly large cabin, including a third row wide enough to accommodate three people across and therefore a total capacity of eight people. Optional second-row captain's chairs, which is what the concept features, will reduce capacity to seven.

The Subaru Ascent Concept also shows off a handsome cabin that's not entirely outlandish. The materials won't be as fancy in the production model, but the overall design should be similar.

 Will They Ever Sell It?

Absolutely. Look for the production Ascent next year.

 Why It's Important

Subaru finally has a three-row crossover that should be competitive with rivals and provide loyal customers with a larger vehicle.
