Subaru Legacy Concept: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The Subaru Legacy Concept celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy by showing off what the next one might look like. It’s far bolder and more muscular than today’s Legacy, thanks to coupelike styling that includes a high belt line, chiseled lines down both sides, aggressive front and rear bumpers and a large grille. The Legacy Concept also features 21-inch chrome wheels.

Inside, the Legacy Concept boasts a lot of new technology. There’s a large center console with touchscreen buttons and controls, a large amount of blue lighting, a new steering wheel and a clear glass roof that gives the interior an open feeling. The Legacy Concept also includes Subaru’s Eyesight system, which monitors the road for dangerous situations.

While the Legacy Concept is indeed just a concept, Subaru says it “provides a look at the styling cues for future Legacy models.” That is good news for shoppers, since the Legacy Concept trades in the nondescript midsize sedan look of today’s model for much sportier styling. But Subaru loyalists, don’t worry: The Legacy Concept still features standard all-wheel drive, as you’d expect from a Subaru.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Not in this form, but don’t be surprised if you see some of the Legacy Concept’s more distinctive features — such as its larger grille and wheels or maybe its bold taillights — find their way onto Subaru’s production cars in the coming years.

Why It’s Important

While the Subaru Legacy Concept doesn’t show us exactly what the automaker has planned for the next Legacy, it gives us a good idea. From this, we can deduce a few important things. One is that Subaru is already thinking about the next Legacy — which makes sense, as the current model debuted four years ago.

But we can also expect, based on the Legacy Concept’s styling, that Subaru has sporty plans for its next midsize sedan. The concept’s coupelike styling and large wheels certainly suggest that. And we can also expect that the next Legacy will feature a little more technology, though we’d be surprised to see it go as far as a full glass roof or a large center console for both rows of seats.
