Being efficient and leaving a smaller carbon footprint are two things that are on everyone's minds these days.  To that, here are three green cars that are making news at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show:

The Acura ILX is a compact entry-level premium sedan based on the Honda Civic.  It will offer three efficient powertrains, including Acura's first-ever hybrid set-up, which is the same gas-electric system found in the Civic Hybrid.  More specifically, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor tied to a lithium-ion battery.  Also adding to its green credentials, the ILX will introduce Acura's sleek new design language called "Aero-fused Dynamics."

On the clean diesel front, the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI arrives with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel with direct injection. This Beetle will have an EPA rating of 29-city/39-highway.  At the same time, it will offer excellent off-the-line acceleration, thanks in part to an optional six-speed dual-clutch gearbox with manual shift capability.  Visually, the Beetle TDI sets itself apart with an exterior chrome trim line, specialized badging and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Another great fuel-efficient small car is the all-new Hyundai Elantra Coupe This two-door iteration of the popular Elantra will be a little sportier in shape and design, while still delivering excellent fuel economy.  Power comes from the same 148-horsepower 1.8-liter inline-four as the Elantra sedan.  Those models sold in California will receive a little less horsepower and the coveted "Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle" rating.

And those are the green car highlights.  Be sure to check frequently for more articles, photos and videos from the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.
