What Is It?
The Toyota Supra racing concept is our best hint yet of what the all-new 2020 Supra will look like, with the much anticipated fifth-generation set to return to Toyota showrooms 17 years after the demise of the legendary A80 model.
Look beneath the giant swan-neck wing and diffuser, pumped wheel arches, jutting front splitter and winglets, center-lock wheels, bonnet vents and latches and racing door mirrors and it’s not hard to imagine the production version, which seems to be not too far removed from the FT-1 concepts shown in 2014.
The head- and taillights appear to be production-ready, as does the 2000GT-referencing window line and double-bubble roof, ducktail boot lid, front guard scoops, door handles and doors with unique diagonal gills. The headlights also have a strong visual link to the new Corolla iM (also revealed today).
Toyota has confirmed that the “90” race numbers on each door are a nod to the fifth-generation using the A90 model code, which follows the A40, A60, A70 and A80 models used over the Supra’s now 4-decade-long history.
The new Toyota Supra will be the first tangible fruit of Toyota’s technology-sharing alliance with BMW, and is expected to share its underpinnings with the next-generation Z4 — a similar arrangement to the Toyota/Subaru partnership which brought us the 86/BRZ.
Aside from sticking to the Supra’s traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, Toyota is keeping mum on other details for now. Overseas reports suggest length and weight figures only marginally greater than those of the 86, however. The drivetrain is also expected to adhere to the Supra’s straight 6-cylinder tradition, with the BMW relationship giving it access to suite of powerful turbocharged straight-six options.
Will They Ever Sell It?
Yes, with Toyota’s press materials hinting the showroom version will appear within the next 12 months.
Why It’s Important
The new Toyota Supra performance flagship is a key part of global boss Akio Toyoda’s plan to inject more personality into the Toyota lineup. The 86 sports coupe and the C-HR compact SUV were the first big steps in this direction, but the Supra is set to form a halo for the brand in a similar fashion to the Acura NSX and Nissan GT-R.
