What Is It?
The Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Edition comes to the 2017 Chicago Auto Show as an illustration of how prospective Atlas buyers can spec out their new rides. In case anyone missed any recent VW developments, the Atlas is an all-new 3-row crossover SUV in the same vein as the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander, and the regular 2018 model goes on sale this spring.
The Weekend Edition comes with an Urban Loader roof-mounted cargo box that can expand to 17.7 cu ft. This attaches to roof rails that can also handle snowboards, kayaks and the like. Behind the second row of seats is a pet-friendly barrier and a cargo divider, while the trunk area can take a cargo cover and heavy-duty liner. And the whole cabin can benefit from all-weather rubber mats. The second row even has universal tablet mounts, so rear passengers can bring along their own entertainment and use the vehicle’s Wi-Fi system.
Will They Ever Sell It?
Not in this exact configuration, but these are all accessories that will be available with every new Atlas. So buyers could achieve something similar. This concept uses the SEL Premium model with the 3.6-liter V6 and all-wheel drive as its starting point.
Why It’s Important
The Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Edition concept is more than just a storefront window for VW’s range of accessories. It’s another way to remind us that this vehicle, which should play a major part in VW’s North American business, is coming soon.
