Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept: Beijing Auto Show

What Is It?

The Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept is a handsome sport sedan designed with an emphasis on performance and bold styling. Based on the same chassis as the new Volkswagen Golf, the so-called NMC is smaller than the compact Jetta sedan, so you'd be right to think of it as a baby brother to the 4-door Volkswagen CC.

On the outside, the New Midsize Coupe concept is unmistakably Volkswagen, and that's a good thing. While it shares some lines with the Jetta, it also boasts more aggressive front and rear ends with narrow headlights and taillights that offer an especially bold look. There are also larger wheels and a sweeping roofline that gives the car a coupelike appearance.

Inside, the New Midsize Coupe concept also offers a more engaging look than the similarly sized Jetta. There are high-end materials throughout the cabin, along with upscale stitching on the seats and gear lever. Most importantly, the center stack is angled toward the driver in a design touch that's borrowed from many high-end sports cars.

Under the hood, the New Midsize Coupe borrows its turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder from the Jetta GLI. In the NMC, that engine makes 217 horsepower and propels the car to 60 miles per hour in just 6.5 seconds. Using the standard 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, VW says the NMC will eclipse 30 miles per gallon.

Will They Ever Sell It?

We think the New Midsize Coupe likely has a future, largely because it rides on Volkswagen's new MQB platform. Since the platform underpins many modern Volkswagens, the cost of adding another won't be substantial. Then again, the car's debut at the Beijing Auto Show may mean it will only be offered in Asian markets.

Why It's Important

The Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept previews a sporty direction that Volkswagen could go in with its popular small-car lineup. That's good news for shoppers who may feel alienated by some of Volkswagen's recent models, which have emphasized mainstream appeal over quirks and performance.

The NMC concept is also important to us for another reason: We happen to think it looks really good. As a result, we would happily welcome it to the Volkswagen lineup, even if it has to share space with the more popular Jetta. Surely some shoppers would prefer the sporty NMC, just as a few drivers choose the CC over the more practical but less striking Passat.
