What Is It?

The Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE isn't just a preview for a successor to the brand's popular CC sedan. It's a lot more than that. According to Volkswagen, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE shows off an entirely new design language that's set to make its way onto a series of Volkswagen models for years to come.

One striking element of the car's design is easily apparent in the front end, where the GTE offers a bold new take on the Volkswagen corporate grille. There's also a more aggressive front bumper. In profile, the Sport Coupe Concept boasts a sleek, sporty shape (hence its coupe name), while the car's rear section offers flared wheel arches and LED taillights.

Under the hood, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE touts an innovative plug-in hybrid drivetrain that manages to combine a fuel-saving 32-mile range with an impressive 374 horsepower. Also impressive is the car's 155-mile-per-hour top speed and its 17-cu ft. trunk, which is cavernous for a vehicle with such a sweeping, coupe-like style.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Although it's hard to believe that a car could ever reach production with exactly this shape, the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE seems to preview the look of the brand's next CC sedan. We suspect the powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrain is also being tested for its eventual application in a production-ready car. Given its combination of muscle and efficiency, we can't wait.

Why It's Important

The Sport Coupe Concept GTE is important for a few obvious reasons, including its highly futuristic plug-in hybrid powertrain and its potential to replace the swoopy CC sedan.

There's another crucial reason why the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is a big deal in the car world: Its design language is said to preview the future for Volkswagen's entire lineup. In other words, you'll have to get used to that aggressive front end, unique grille and narrow LED taillights, because they'll likely soon find their way onto every Volkswagen in production.
