Cars come and go. It's a fact of automotive life. Some are short-lived experiments that never catch the public's eye, while others are long-running models that simply outlive their audience. Whatever the reason for their demise, we appreciate having had the chance to experience them all. The following are some beloved 2015 cars that will not live to see the 2016 model year, although given the ever-changing nature of the automotive industry, there's no saying they won't be revived in the not-too-distant future.

Honda Crosstour

Controversial from the start, the Crosstour makes its final appearance in 2015. Sometimes thought of as the Accord wagon, the Crosstour's unusual styling didn't win over many critics, and its sloping rear end cut into the cargo bay, making it a poor competitor to SUVs such as the Subaru Outback and Toyota Venza. We all knew the writing was on the wall when Acura axed its version of the Crosstour (dubbed the ZDX) back in 2013. It's clear Honda buyers prefer SUVs in all shapes and sizes. There actually was a Honda Accord wagon, but that was killed long ago. At the same time, we see Honda introducing a new small SUV in the form of the HR-V and updating both the Pilot and Ridgeline.

Infiniti Q40

The Q40 began life as the 2003 G35, and Infiniti's smallest sedan quickly became a favorite of driving enthusiasts everywhere. Seen as the first real challenge by a Japanese luxury automaker to the then-untouchable BMW 3 Series, the G35 would later grow to become the more powerful G37. Over time, cars such as the Cadillac CTS, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class overtook the G37 in the areas of power, handling and technology. After a brand-wide reshuffling, the G37's name was changed to the Q40, and its replacement, the slick Q50 sedan, was introduced.

Jaguar XK

The XK name dates back to 1997, when Jaguar abandoned the XJS and created a separate series for its only coupe and convertible. The first XK cars were powerful, sleek and very expensive. They had a subtle 007 attitude that befit this storied British brand. Still, the XK seemed to attract an older audience and didn't really catch on with younger buyers. Jaguar recently introduced the stunning F-Type coupe and convertible, which found instant success with the under-40 crowd and really put the final nail in the XK's coffin.

Land Rover LR2

The LR2 was the Land Rover that never really caught on with the brand's faithful. Critics complained of the slow acceleration, cramped interior, poor fuel economy and limited off-road ability. Maybe the problem was that Land Rover used a Ford platform and powertrain, or maybe rivals from Audi, BMW and Lexus just did a better job perfecting the compact-luxury-SUV formula. The LR2's poor resale value and reliability rating didn't help matters much, either.

Mazda5

The Mazda5 combined the fuel efficiency of the compact Mazda3 with a minivanlike vehicle, complete with sliding side doors and seating for seven. The Mazda5 wasn't big on power, but it sure was playful in the turns, something that couldn't be said of the Kia Rondo or Dodge Grand Caravan. Although sales were never very strong, Mazda stuck by their half-van, half-compact-car concept for nearly 10 years before calling it quits. That's too bad: We liked the Mazda5 quite a bit and even named it to our Must Test Drive list in 2013.

Mini Roadster and Coupe

The cancellation of these two cars may have been a result of Mini's initial success. In a bid to increase sales, Mini expanded the Cooper line, shrinking the little car to create the 2-seater Mini Coupe and Roadster. Too many Minis seemed to confuse buyers, so this pair won't be returning for 2016.

Nissan Xterra

Nissan's rugged body-on-frame Xterra SUV has been a favorite of off-roaders everywhere. Introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model, the Xterra included such cool features as second-row theater-style seating, a built-in first-aid kit, an interior bike rack and a roof-mounted drying basket. Seen by many as a better, safer and more reliable alternative to the Jeep Wrangler, the Xterra was eventually doomed by the public's appetite for more comfortable, car-based SUVs such as the Nissan Pathfinder and Murano.

Scion iQ and xB

In what can only be seen as the ultimate of ironies, Scion announced that 2015 would be the final year for its subcompact iQ and boxy xB, and shortly thereafter, Toyota announced that 2016 would be the final year for the entire Scion division. Both the iQ and xB were inexpensive, reliable and fuel efficient, but they just never had the cool features and styling pop of competitors such as the Kia Soul, FIAT 500 and Chevy Spark.

Toyota Venza

Of all the 2015 cars taking their final bow, this one makes us the saddest. The Venza was a really good car. Stylish, powerful and available with all-wheel drive, it was a more comfortable and roomier alternative to the Subaru Outback and Honda Crosstour. Anyone looking for an affordable Lexus RX alternative might want to look for a certified pre-owned Toyota Venza Limited.
