6 Best New Toyotas Under $35,000 for 2019

Toyota offers a great array of reliable, efficient vehicles in just about every major segment from small cars to crossovers to trucks. In recent years, the company’s prioritization of safety and hybrid technology has only served to strengthen its foothold as one of the most highly considered brands in America. As the average price of a new car in recent years has hovered at just over $35,000, here’s a list of six great new Toyotas that can be had for $35k or less.

2019 Toyota RAV4

2019 Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle in America in 2018, and for 2019 it’s all new, having received a full redesign. One of our favorite new Toyotas, the 2019 RAV4 is offered with two powertrains, both highly competent. Nonhybrid models get a new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 206 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque — both healthy figures. With this more basic powertrain the RAV4 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which we prefer to the continuously variable units commonly found in the competition. Buyers can also opt for the RAV4 Hybrid, which uses a version of that same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with an added hybrid component, making for a total system output of 219 hp, and paired with an electronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). The RAV4 Hybrid requires buyers pay just a small price premium over a standard RAV4 and in turn nets impressive fuel economy gains, with EPA ratings of 41 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The Hybrid is also available in a fun XSE trim, which offers a sportier suspension setup, while the standard RAV4 can be had in an Adventure grade, which comes with a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive (AWD) system, all-weather floor mats and more functional roof-rails. While the Adventure trim is compelling for its off-roady aesthetic, we actually prefer the XSE Hybrid model for its efficiency, not to mention its driving dynamics that are, dare we say, kind of sporty. Either one comes with a starting price of just under $35,000. Find a Toyota RAV4 for sale

2019 Toyota Camry

2019 Toyota Camry

When it gave the Camry a full redesign for the 2018 model year, Toyota opted to inject it with an element of style and excitement not present in past iterations, and the result is a Camry that is more engaging to drive — and certainly more engaging to look at — than any of the versions that preceded it. Three powertrains are available: an economical 4-cylinder, a V6 putting out 301 hp and a hybrid that returns up to 52 mpg. As the Camry has a starting price of $25,500, any of these three powertrains can be had for under $35,000. The nicest 4-cylinder Camrys are the XLE and XSE models, the XLE offering a more luxurious demeanor to the XSE’s sporty aesthetic, and both top out at just over $35k. If you insist on the V6, you’re looking at around $35,000 for a base V6 XSE or V6 XLE model, either of which tops out at around $38,000 when fully loaded. The Hybrid starts at around $30,000 and reaches $34,000 fully loaded. While the V6 is certainly the most exciting option, it’s hard to argue with the fuel efficiency of the Hybrid, as 52 mpg is downright impressive. Find a Toyota Camry for sale

2019 Toyota Prius Prime

2019 Toyota Prius Prime

The Prius Prime is the plug-in hybrid version of Toyota’s venerable Prius. With up to 25 miles of electric-only range and a total combined range of 640 miles, which translates to 54 mpg in combined driving, or 133 MPGe (the metric used for electric vehicles), the Prius Prime is the most fuel efficient Toyota out there. While it’s offered with an available Tesla-like 11.6-in center infotainment display, the Prius Prime still lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, which serves to put all that screen real estate to waste, as Toyota’s own homegrown infotainment software is mediocre at best. Still, if you like the idea of driving a Prius and you’ve got access to charging infrastructure and don’t drive more than 25 miles per day, the Prius Prime is compelling, as it’s the only mainstream Toyota that allows for truly gas-free transportation. You can have any Prius Prime you want for under $35,000, as prices start at $28,450 for a base Plus model and reach $34,450 for a fully loaded Advanced model. Find a Toyota Prius Prime for sale

2019 Toyota Highlander

2019 Toyota Highlander

The Highlander is Toyota’s family-hauling crossover SUV, competing with the likes of the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Volkswagen Atlas and Chevrolet Traverse. The Highlander offers similar powertrains to the Camry, with 4-cylinder and V6 engines offered, along with a hybrid. Additionally, the Highlander has room for up to eight people along with Toyota’s suite of active safety features as standard. While it makes a great family vehicle, buyers working with a budget of $35,000 don’t have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a Highlander, as only the basic LE model carries a sticker price of under $35,000, when accounting for delivery fees. That said, an all-new Highlander will go on sale later this year for the 2020 model year, which means that you can likely pick up a 2019 Highlander at a discount as dealers make room for the new model. Currently, there are close to 1,000 brand new 2019 Highlanders listed on Autotrader for $35k or less. Find a Toyota Highlander for sale

2019 Toyota Sienna

2019 Toyota Sienna

Like a few other vehicles in Toyota’s lineup, the Sienna follows the mantra "if it’s not broken, don’t fix it." Having been on sale largely unchanged since the 2011 model year, the Sienna has old bones, but is still a competent minivan. Power comes courtesy of a tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6 making a respectable 296 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. While it doesn’t score as well as the competition in crash testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), earning scores of Acceptable and Marginal in the new small front overlap test, the Sienna does boast an array of active safety features, with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams and radar cruise control among other things. On top of that, the Sienna offers optional AWD — the only minivan to do so. Buyers looking for a $35,000 Sienna should look to an LE model, which offers room for up to eight people and a stowable second-row seat. Find a Toyota Sienna for sale

2019 Toyota Tacoma

2019 Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is the best-selling midsize truck on sale today and has been for the past several years. Offering two different cab designs and two different bed lengths, there’s a Tacoma for just about anyone. Additionally, Toyota offers the Tacoma in a variety of different trim levels. Buyers looking for a basic, old-school truck can look to the SR5 model, which gets you simple features like fog lights, 16-in wheels and a power sliding rear window on crew cab models. Step up to the TRD Sport and you get 18-in alloy wheels, a hood scoop and body-colored fender flares for a sporty appearance. While any 4-wheel drive (4WD) equipped Tacoma will offer basic off-road capability, we feel that the TRD Off-Road trim represents the Tacoma at its best, as it comes with all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, a Bilstein suspension and a few off-road drive modes, among other things. Buyers should be able to find a Tacoma TRD Sport for under $35,000 with relative ease. While technically the TRD Off-Road model has an MSRP of slightly over $35,000, if you’re willing to do a bit of hunting, you should be able to find one for right around $35k thanks to dealer pricing incentives, and there are currently around 225 such examples listed on Autotrader. One other thing: The Tacoma receives an update for the coming 2020 model year, so if you can wait a few months, you’ll likely be able to pick up a Tacoma with more features — like Apple CarPlay and a much-needed power driver’s seat — than ever before. Find a Toyota Tacoma for sale
