A certified pre-owned car is a great way to get behind the wheel of a modern car with a manufacturer’s warranty at a nice discount. CPO vehicles are gently used and have been thoroughly inspected and you get some of the perks of a new car like a warranty and some of the perks of a used car like a price that’s seen some depreciation.
A nice perk you can have on top of both of those is excellent fuel economy if you shop for the right car. Here are six great CPO cars that get 40 miles per gallon or better in the city, on the highway, or both for 2019.
2016-2019 Toyota Prius
The most efficient and perhaps the most common CPO car on our list is the ever-popular Toyota Prius. This hybrid hatchback entered its fourth generation for the 2016 model year bringing with it its best fuel economy yet at 58 mpg city/53 mpg hwy. No matter what the price of gas is, that incredible fuel economy is always nice to have and can save you some serious coin on fuel. On top of being super efficient, the Prius is a just plain good car with perks like a roomy interior, a smooth, quiet ride and the reliability that Toyota is famous for. You can easily find a nice CPO Prius for under $25,000. Find a Toyota Prius for sale
2017-2019 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel
A well-kept secret in efficient compact cars that not a lot of people know about is the diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze. This compact gets excellent fuel economy numbers of 31 mpg city/48 mpg hwy running on diesel fuel, making it quite a bit more efficient than the gas-powered Cruze, which itself is pretty good on gas, too. The Cruze also offers a level of comfort you might be surprised to find in a compact plus a very user-friendly infotainment system. The diesel version of this Chevy is a bit of a rarity, but if you can find one near you it will likely be under the $20,000 mark. Find a Chevrolet Cruze for sale
2017-2019 Jaguar XE Diesel
If you like the idea of an efficient diesel engine and have some more room in your budget, consider upgrading to the fantastic Jaguar XE diesel luxury sedan. This Jaguar is one of the most fun to drive cars in its extremely competitive class, and that’s saying a lot. Not only does it have excellent handling, but it has a sophisticated look and a luxurious feel inside and out. The diesel version has an impressive fuel economy rating of 32 mpg city/42 mpg hwy and can be found on the CPO lot for under $35,000. Like the Cruze diesel, however, these CPO cars might be a bit of a challenge to track down. Find a Jaguar XE for sale
2016-2019 Honda Civic 1.5T
Getting back to cars that are easier to find, the outstanding current generation of the Honda Civic equipped with the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine just might be the perfect compact car. The turbo engine not only delivers better performance than the base engine, but it’s also slightly more efficient with a fuel economy rating of 31 city/42 mpg hwy. Available as a coupe, sedan or hatchback, the Civic also offers a nice interior, excellent safety scores, a smooth ride with crisp handling, and some awesome available tech features, which become more affordable when you shop CPO compared to new. You can easily find a nice Civic with the good turbo engine for under the $20k mark. Find a Honda Civic for sale
2017-2019 Kia Niro
The Kia Niro subcompact crossover is still a bit of a newcomer to the hybrid game, but it has aged just enough to start getting more common on the CPO market. The Niro hybrid impresses us with its fuel economy of up to 52 city/49 mpg hwy, but keep in mind that those numbers change when you go higher up through the model range. If you want more features in a higher trim, you’ll be sacrificing a little bit in the way of fuel economy, but every Niro is still a very efficient car. The interior is roomy and the cargo area is delightfully large for a subcompact SUV. All of the above makes the Niro a CPO a bargain in the $15k-25k range. Find a Kia Niro for sale
2017-2019 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
If you like the idea of an efficient luxury sedan, but you’re not sure you’re ready to commit to a diesel lifestyle, then it’s the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid to the rescue. The MKZ got a nice face-lift for 2017 making it look more like its more upmarket sibling, the Continental. This midsize sedan is respectably efficient returning 41 city/38 mpg hwy. It’s not the most thrilling luxury car from behind the wheel, but it is a comfortable cruiser with a smooth, quiet ride. Since it’s fairly affordable when new, it’s an even better deal after going through some depreciation. You kind find an MKX Hybrid for less than $30,000 which is a luxury car bargain, especially considering how much you’ll save at the pump. Find a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid for sale
