Given customer’s demands for SUVs and trucks, family sedans — both new and used — represent an excellent value in the current market. While SUVs command a premium given their perceived ruggedness and tougher demeanor, just about every midsize sedan offers a spacious cabin, great safety features and a reasonably large trunk, making it just as viable an option, despite the fact that they’re typically only front-wheel drive. In order to help prospective buyers take advantage of the great values to be had on gently-used midsize sedans on sale today, we’ve rounded up six of our favorites that can be had for around $15,000 today.
2014-2017 Toyota Camry
In terms of overall sales, the Camry is the leading midsize sedan on the market and has been for many years. It offers a comfortable ride, a large cabin and great safety features, all backed by Toyota’s reputation for impeccable reliability. Engine options consist of an economical 4-cylinder, a more potent V6 or a hybrid that returns 39 miles per gallon in combined driving. There are well over 1,000 2014-2017 Toyota Camry models listed on Autotrader for around $15,000 or less. Close to 200 are hybrid models, while over 60 come with the more potent V6 engine.
If newness is what you’re after, there are even around 125 2018 and 2019 Camry models listed on Autotrader for around $15,000 as well. The Camry was all-new for 2018 and offers an element of style not found on previous generations. Most sub-$15,000 current gen Camrys listed on Autotrader are the base LE trim, which comes with 17-in wheels, a power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar, and an array of active safety features like automatic emergency braking and available blind spot monitoring. 2013-2017 Honda Accord
The Accord has long been the number two selling family sedan behind the Camry, but generally offers a nicer interior and a better driving experience than the more value-oriented Toyota. The Accord is known for offering pleasant handling and great attention to detail. Like the Camry, the 2013-2017 Accord was sold with either a 4- or 6-cylinder engine and also offered a hybrid variant, although the Accord Hybrid is less common than the Camry Hybrid. Honda is known for offering excellent resale value, and the Accord depreciates slowly, meaning buyers have to go back a couple of years to find one for under $15,000. Your best bet is to target a ninth-generation Accord, offered over the 2013 to 2017 model years, and there are currently just over 350 listed. Still, the majority of ninth-gen Accords selling for $15k or less are from the earlier years, and there are only a handful or 2016 and 2017 examples on Autotrader that fit within our budget. 2016-2018 Nissan Altima
The third best-selling family sedan in the U.S. last year, the Nissan Altima offers great value, especially when looking at used examples. The fifth-generation Altima came out for the 2013 model year, was updated in 2016 and sold through 2018. We recommend finding a 2016-or-newer model, as these came with updated styling, improved sound deadening and Nissan’s comfortable "Zero Gravity" front seats, which were supposedly co-developed with NASA. Powertrain options are similar to the competition, with 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines offered. No hybrid Altima is offered, leaving the 4-cylinder as the most fuel-efficient option, and it returns 31 mpg combined while also making 182 horsepower. The Altima’s V6 makes 270 hp and returns 25 mpg in combined driving. There are currently over 1,000 2016-2018 Altimas listed for sale on Autotrader for around $15,000 or less, just under 100 of which even come with the potent V6 engine. Find a Nissan Altima for sale
2015-2018 Subaru Legacy
Buyers are drawn to the Subaru Legacy for its standard all-wheel-drive system. Four-wheel traction or not, the Legacy is a competent family sedan, and like the other vehicles on this list, is offered with either a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Regardless of engine choice, every Legacy comes with a continuously variable transmission. While earlier Subarus suffered from interiors that weren’t up to par with the competition, the company has made major strides in recent years, and the Legacy’s interior is much improved over that of previous generations. Overall, the Legacy’s AWD system makes it stand out in a segment dominated by FWD, making it a great choice for anyone living in a climate that sees a lot of snow. Right now on Autotrader there are around 650 2015-and-newer Legacy models listed for around $15,000 or less, the majority of which come with the basic 4-cylinder engine. Find a Subaru Legacy for sale
2013-2018 Ford Fusion
Ford’s Fusion was a hit when it debuted way back in 2006, and has continued on as a strong player in the midsize sedan segment for well over a decade now. The second-generation model, which came out in 2013, introduced bold new styling with an aggressive grille similar to what you’ll find on an Aston Martin sports car. The Fusion’s sleek styling carries on through the rear, with a steeply sloping roofline and simple oval-shaped taillights. Needless to say, the Fusion is one of the better-looking vehicles on this list. It’s also been offered with a variety of different engines over the years, from a basic naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder, to three turbocharged 4-cylinders, to a small turbocharged V6 making a healthy 325 hp. The Fusion is also available with AWD, making it the only other vehicle on this list to offer 4-wheel traction. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are offered as well. Altogether, there’s a Fusion out there for just about anyone. Right now on Autotrader, there are countless 2013-2018 Fusions listed for $15,000 or less. Over 1,000 offer the hybrid powertrain, while close to 600 are AWD models. Find a Ford Fusion for sale
As far as used family sedans go, the Mazda6 offers great quality and an upscale design, not to mention handling and driving dynamics that are far and above better than what you get with the competition. Mazda’s midsize sedan was all-new for 2014. Although a turbocharged option was just added for the 2019 model year, the Mazda6 was only offered with one engine from 2014 through 2018: a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder putting out 184 hp and good for up to 30 mpg in combined driving. Buyers have tons of 2014-2018 Mazda6 models to choose from on Autotrader for under $15,000. There are even over 100 listings for the 2017-and-newer model, which comes with a new steering wheel and improved sound deadening, helping to elevate the already borderline luxury-car experience you get with the stylish Mazda6.
