6 Great Used Hatchbacks Under $10,000 for 2020

Thanks to their large rear hatch openings and voluminous cargo holds, hatchbacks offer immense practicality, and with so many American buyers flocking toward SUVs, used hatchbacks have started to become particularly affordable. Here are six of our favorite used hatchbacks under $10,000 for 2020.

2014-2018 Mazda3 Hatchback

2014-2018 Mazda3 Hatchback

Mazda has long been known for offering just a little more than the rest of its mainstream competition, and as such, the Mazda3 is highly regarded for its upscale interior and great driving dynamics. While an all-new fourth-generation model debuted for 2019, the third-generation Mazda3 was offered for the 2014 through 2018 model years and came in both sedan and hatchback body styles. While later models give off the hardest luxury vibes, early examples use the same bones and are therefore almost just as impressive. There are currently right around 100 2014-or-newer Mazda3 hatchbacks listed for sale on Autotrader for around $10,000 or less. Find a Mazda3 for sale

2012-2016 Subaru Impreza

2012-2016 Subaru Impreza

The biggest thing that sets the Impreza apart from the competition is its standard all-wheel drive. Given this, the Impreza usually holds its value a little better than its front-wheel drive competitors, but there’s still a wide array of options for buyers working with a budget of $10,000. At this price point, we recommend looking at options from the Impreza’s fourth-generation, which was sold from the 2012 to 2016 model years. Under the hood of every fourth-gen Impreza is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder putting out 148 horsepower while returning fuel economy ratings of 27 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, pretty impressive given that it’s responsible for turning all four wheels. Right now on Autotrader, there are about 150 Impreza hatchbacks listed that could be had for around $10,000. Find a Subaru Impreza for sale

2015-2018 Honda Fit

2015-2018 Honda Fit

The Fit has long been known for its space-efficient design and fun driving dynamics. It also comes with a surprisingly nice interior, allowing it to stand out in the subcompact segment in which it competes. It even features a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows you to carry long items like skis inside of the cabin. The third-gen Fit went on sale for the 2015 model year and early examples have crept down into the $10,000 price range, with close to 200 currently listed for sale on Autotrader that would Fit the bill. Find a Honda Fit for sale

2012-2015 Toyota Prius

2012-2015 Toyota Prius

As far as used hatchbacks under $10,000 go, the Toyota Prius is certainly the most fuel-efficient choice. The third-generation Toyota Prius offers an EPA fuel economy rating of 48 miles per gallon combined and updated third-gen examples from the 2012 to 2015 model years are now readily available for around $10,000, with over 500 viable options listed on Autotrader. Additionally, two other variations of the Prius were sold during this era as well that should offer unique appeal. First was the Prius C, which was a smaller, more maneuverable option aimed at buyers in urban settings, and there are currently over 250 to choose from at the $10,000 price point. On the other end of the spectrum is the Prius V, which was longer and had a taller roof than the regular Prius, making for greater overall interior space. There are currently around 160 Prius Vs listed that could be had for about $10,000 or less. Find a Toyota Prius for sale

2015-2018 Ford Focus

2015-2018 Ford Focus

The third-generation Ford Focus came out way back in 2011 and was sold through the end of 2018 when Ford finally decided to kill it off as part of the company’s increased focus on SUVs. Thanks to the sheer number of model years for which it was on sale, it’s extremely easy to find a third-gen Focus for around $10,000 or less, but we recommend targeting examples from the 2015 model year and up, as these received a refresh that brought styling and feature content more in line with modern competitors. Right now on Autotrader, there are currently close to 1,000 2015-2018 Focuses to choose from for around $10,000 or less. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a little more excitement, widen your search to include examples all the way back to the 2013 model year and you’ll find around 30 high-performance Focus ST models that would work with our budget. Find a Ford Focus for sale

2014-2019 Kia Soul

2014-2019 Kia Soul

The Soul is a funky, upright, boxy hatchback from Kia. While its overall size results in it being categorized as a subcompact, its squared-off proportions mean it offers 24 cu ft. of cargo space behind the second row, on par with many hatchbacks competing one segment up in the compact category. Additionally, while it isn’t available with AWD, the Soul offers an upright driving position, which should help it to appeal to many prospective SUV buyers who don’t necessarily need four-wheel traction. Factor in Kia’s orientation toward overall value, and the Soul is a compelling option. There are currently over 1,000 third-gen Souls listed on Autotrader for around $10,000 or less, around 150 of which are updated 2017-2019 models. Find a Kia Soul for sale
