Here in 2019, regardless of whether they're in the market for a sedan, coupe, SUV or hatchback, a lot of buyers are looking for a vehicle with all-wheel drive. Typically, this means paying a premium over a comparably equipped 2-wheel drive vehicle. This can send a lot of buyers looking to the used market. Here, we'll outline seven AWD cars great for a budget of around $20,000.

2013-2015 Honda Pilot
2013-2015 Honda Pilot

The Pilot is Honda's 3-row SUV and the second-generation model, sold from 2009-2015, is now available on the used market for around $20,000. The Pilot received an update for 2013 that introduced more modern styling along with changes to the interior, so we recommend targeting a Pilot from the 2013 to 2015 model years in your search. Thanks to a third row that seats three across, the Pilot can accommodate up to eight passengers. Power comes from a 250-horsepower V6 mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. There are currently around 400 AWD equipped 2013 to 2015 Honda Pilots listed on Autotrader for around $20,000. Find a Honda Pilot for sale

2016-2018 Toyota RAV4
2016-2018 Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 was the best-selling passenger vehicle in the U.S. in 2018 and it isn't hard to see why. The RAV4 is practical, efficient and reliable. It's also extremely safe, thank to the presence of Toyota's excellent suite of driver-assistance safety features, known as Toyota Safety Sense, which was standard on 2018 mod-ls and optional for 2016 and 2017. Front-wheel drive is standard, while AWD is optional. A RAV4 Hybrid was offered over these years, although these hold their value better than a standard RAV4, thanks to their added efficiency, and thus are harder to find for $20k. There are currently tons of non-hybrid 2016-2018 RAV4s listed on Autotrader though for under $20,000, many of which have AWD. Find a Toyota RAV4 for sale

2015-2018 Subaru Outback
2015-2018 Subaru Outback

A list of AWD cars wouldn't be complete without the Subaru Outback. Thanks to the vehicle's mix of practicality and efficiency, Subaru has sold over 100,000 Outbacks every year since 2011. Offering wagon proportions with the capability of an SUV, the Outback appeals to everyone from families to adventurers to pet owners. Two engines are offered -- a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 170 hp and a 3.6-liter V6 putting out 256 hp -- both of which come paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the interests of fuel economy. As with every Subaru product (aside from the BRZ coupe) AWD is standard. There are currently close to 1,000 2015-2018 Subaru Outbacks to choose from on Autotrader for $20,000 or less, each of which comes with AWD. Find a Subaru Outback for sale

2016-2017 Chevrolet Equinox

The Equinox is a 5-passenger SUV that technically fits into the midsize segment, although it's often cross-shopped with compact SUVs like the Ford Escape and the Jeep Cherokee. While an all-new Equinox was introduced for 2018, buyers can pick up a 2016 or 2017 model for under $20,000, and there are currently tons listed on Autotrader with AWD that would fit the bill. Over 400 are even in the high-end LTZ and Premier trims. In its upper trims, the Equinox adds safety features like forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, a backup camera and a power lift gate. Powering the Equinox is either a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder making 182 hp or a 3.6-liter V6 churning out 301 hp. Altogether, the Equinox should be thought of as either a large compact SUV or a smaller midsize SUV, and offers good value overall, especially on the used market. Find a Chevrolet Equinox for sale

2015-2018 Audi A3
2015-2018 Audi A3

Sharing a platform with the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf, the Audi A3 offers great handling and driving dynamics, an efficient turbocharged engine and the benefits of AWD, not to mention an attractive exterior design and luxurious interior appointments. The A3's 2.0-liter turbo makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to scoot the compact sedan from 0-to-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. Another benefit of the A3 is that it's available with AWD, and right now on Autotrader, there are currently around 500 AWD equipped 2015-2018 Audi A3s listed for around $20,000. Find an Audi A3 for sale

2016-2018 Ford Explorer
2016-2018 Ford Explorer

The fifth-generation Explorer, introduced for the 2011 model year, marked an all-new direction for Ford's midsize family hauling SUV, trading out previous models' truck-derived body-on-frame construction for an efficient, FWD-based unibody design. This helped to better align the Explorer with competitors like the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander, both of which had used this more modern construction since they first came onto the market years earlier. The new Explorer proved to be a hit with customers, thanks to its generous interior dimensions and range of available engines. The Explorer was one of the first vehicles to use Ford's MyTouch infotainment controls and SYNC voice controls. Early iterations of this system were a bit cumbersome, so you may want to look to an updated 2016-or-newer model, if you're able to find one in your price range. Currently on Autotrader, there are close to 300 2016-2018 Explorers with AWD listed for around $20,000. Find a Ford Explorer for sale

2009-2014 Honda Ridgeline
2009-2014 Honda Ridgeline

We assume that if you're browsing this list, you're looking for a car or an SUV, rather than a pickup. That said, we've chosen to include the Ridgeline here for one main reason -- it's the pickup for people who don't like pickups. Based on the same platform that underpins the midsize Pilot SUV, the Ridgeline forgoes the old-school rear-wheel-drive based, body-on-frame construction you get with every other pickup on the market, instead employing a FWD based unibody design, which is great for handling and ride quality. We also love the Ridgeline's boxy design. AWD is still available, and most Ridgelines you find will come equipped with it. Additionally, the Ridgeline offers a few party tricks you won't find on other midsize pickups, like a trunk located under the bed floor, a tailgate that can fold down like a traditional tailgate or swing out to the side, and a composite bed that won't dent or rust. Power comes from a 3.5-liter V6 putting out 250 hp. There are currently over 300 2009-2014 Honda Ridgelines with AWD listed on Autotrader for around $20,000 . Find a Honda Ridgeline for sale
