Finding a cheap used car doesn't have to mean sacrificing on practicality, and there are a lot of vehicles out there that offer more than just point-to-point transportation. Below, we'll take a look at seven great used hatchbacks that offer the practicality of an SUV at car like prices, as these options are available for around $5,000 or less.

2010-2013 Kia Soul

2010-2013 Kia Soul

Thanks to its boxy proportions, the Soul offers excellent practicality, all at a very economical price. Undoubtedly one of the quirkiest vehicles on the market, a first-generation Soul, offered from 2010 to 2013, is a great option for someone looking for a practical used car with a budget of $5,000. The Soul was offered in a variety of unique colors like green, brown and yellow. Fun features like 2-tone leather seats, a 350-watt sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and 18-in wheels are all available. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 100 Kia Souls listed for around $5,000 or less. Find a Kia Soul for sale

2007-2011 Nissan Versa

2007-2011 Nissan Versa

Great for the budget-conscious shopper, the Nissan Versa was inexpensive even when new, meaning that there are plenty of used examples out there for around $5,000. The Versa is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder making 122 horsepower. Nissans usually offer good reliability. Combine that with fuel economy that usually falls in the 30 miles per gallon range, and the Versa is a great cheap car that won't cost much to operate or maintain. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 250 Versa hatchbacks for sale for around $5,000. Find a Nissan Versa for sale

2008-2014 Toyota Yaris

2008-2014 Toyota Yaris

The 2008-2014 Yaris hatchback was sold in 3- and 5-door body styles. A sedan variant was offered, as well. The Yaris is considered a subcompact, but is smaller than competitors like the Honda Fit and the Hyundai Accent. There are currently fewer than 100 Yaris hatchbacks listed on Autotrader in the $5,000 range, meaning it may take a while to find one that's right for you. Rest assured, though, that any Yaris is going to offer respectable fuel economy, good safety ratings and great reliability. Overall, a cheap used Yaris is great for a first time buyer or anyone living in the city needing easy, maneuverable transportation. Find a Toyota Yaris for sale

2011-2016 Ford Focus

2011-2016 Ford Focus

The current-generation Ford Focus came out way back in 2011 and has carried on in the same body style to this day. A variety of fuel efficient engines have been offered in the Focus over the years, all of which return great fuel economy. Currently on Autotrader there are around 125 2011-2016 Focus hatchbacks listed for around $5k. Of these, around 25 are even the upper-level SEL and Titanium trims that include items like dual zone climate control and a sunroof. The Titanium trim can even be had with rear parking sensors and Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system. If you're after a Focus in either of these trims for $5,000, expect to find one with higher mileage on the odometer, as most of the SEL and Titanium models listed come with well over 100k under their belt. Find a Ford Focus for sale

2003-2008 Toyota Matrix

2003-2008 Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe

The Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe are two practical, reliable Toyota Corolla-based hatchbacks jointly developed and built by Toyota and General Motors. The Matrix has a clever plastic cargo floor and rear seatbacks that made for a tray like load surface when the rear seats were folded down. The second row also folds completely flat, allowing for tons of cargo room. Powering the Matrix was a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder making between 123 and 130 hp, while a more powerful version of that engine was also offered that put out between 164 and 180 hp. All-wheel drive models were even available, although these are tough to come by for $5k. Buyers looking for an even better deal should look to the Pontiac Vibe, which is mechanically identical to the Matrix, but tends to sell for a few thousand dollars less than a comparably equipped Matrix from the same model year. There are currently over 200 Toyota Matrix models and Pontiac Vibes listed on Autotrader for about $5,000. Find a Toyota Matrix for sale or Find a Pontiac Vibe for sale

2004-2009 Mazda3

2004-2009 Mazda3

The Mazda3 is a fun-to-drive premium-feeling compact car sold in both sedan and hatchback body styles. Two 4-cylinder engines were offered: a 2.0-liter making 148 hp or a 2.3-liter putting out 160 hp. Whichever one you choose, expect a Mazda3 to come with superior driving dynamics and a nicer interior than many of the other vehicles on this list, traits Mazda has long used to differentiate its products from the competition. Right now on Autotrader there are around 100 first-generation Mazda3 hatchbacks listed for around $5,000 or less. Find a Mazda3 for sale

2008-2015 FIAT 500

2008-2015 FIAT 500

The FIAT 500 is one of the more modern used hatchbacks you'll find for $5k, with around 100 listed on Autotrader that would fit the bill, some from as recently as the 2015 model year. Classified as a city car, a segment below subcompact, the 500 is tiny, coming in at under 12 feet in length, making it a great urban runabout for anyone living in a densely populated area. Buyers should also see great fuel economy, as the 500 typically returns mpgs in the mid 30s in combined city and highway driving. Given its diminutive size, don't expect to fit much inside a 500, and interior quality leaves something to be desired, but if it's cheap, modern city transportation you're after, a FIAT 500 will do nicely. Find a Fiat 500 for sale
