If a compact SUV doesn’t have enough space and a full-size SUV is too big and inefficient, then a midsize SUV is just right for a lot of drivers. Midsize crossovers and SUVs often have plenty of room for both passengers and cargo and some of the bigger ones have three rows of seats making them family-friendly minivan alternatives.
Midsize SUVs have been popular long enough that they’ve become pretty affordable on the used market. Here are seven great midsize crossovers and SUVs you can find on Autotrader for under $5,000.
2001-2006 Acura MDX
The Acura MDX is one of the vehicles that helped popularize the midsize luxury SUV in the early 2000s and the first-generation model is aging well so far. Based on the Honda Pilot, it offers three rows of seats, a strong V6 and standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on every trim. The AWD system has a lock mode which makes this Acura a surprisingly strong off-roader. It’s quite well-appointed on the inside and it comes with the safety and reliability credentials that Honda is famous for. Find an Acura MDX for sale
2000-2006 BMW X5
The BMW X5 is, well, the BMW of midsize SUVs. It looks like a BMW and more importantly it drives like a BMW, delivering satisfying performance. The X5 does a great job combining the utility and versatility of an SUV with the luxurious ride and the engaging driving experience of a sport sedan. It shares its engine options with the BMW 5 Series of the era, which is a good thing, and it even has some Land Rover DNA in the off-road management system. Find a BMW X5 for sale
2002-2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer marked the end of an era. It was the last midsize SUV we’ve seen from Chevy with a truck-like body-on-frame architecture and rear-wheel drive (RWD) — with optional 4-wheel drive (4WD), of course. If a soft crossover isn’t for you and you’d like something a little more truck-like, then a used TrailBlazer can easily be found in this price range. This Chevy offers up strong engines and a roomy interior, which almost makes it like a smaller Tahoe. Find a Chevrolet TrailBlazer for sale
2007-2014 Ford Edge
The Ford Edge is something a little different in midsize crossovers. It has a unique aesthetic and surprisingly sporty performance from its base V6 combined with a roomy, comfortable interior making it a practical SUV. It got a face-lift in 2011 that included a newly available EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder, but that will be hard to find at this price point. Earlier are quite common under the $5,000 mark meaning you can get one that’s pretty well-appointed for not much money. We recommend finding an Edge in either the Limited or Sport trim for a premium crossover bargain. Find a Ford Edge for sale
2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is famous for its combination of off-road capabilities and everyday drivability. It’s an SUV that you can commute with during the week and go on adventures with on the weekend without skipping a beat. Full disclosure: This is one of the less family-friendly SUVs on our list since its back seat is a bit cramped, but it’s fine for young kids with short legs. If you’re going to get a used Grand Cherokee, we strongly recommend getting one with 4WD so its off-road chops can really shine. Find a Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale
2011-2015 Kia Sorento
There is only a handful of this generation of the Kia Sorento on Autotrader, but it’s definitely one to keep an eye out for if you’re shopping for an affordable, modern midsize crossover. It’s a well-rounded crossover that hits all the right notes with a comfortable ride, good fuel economy and an available third row of seats. It also has a generous list of standard features, meaning you can get a used example of one of the lower trims and still get a well-equipped SUV. This Sorento was a great value when it was new and it’s an even better value now on the used market. Find a Kia Sorento for sale
2001-2007 Toyota Highlander
When it comes to family-friendly 3-row SUVs, the Toyota Highlander is a value that’s hard to beat. If you like the idea of a minivan but just can’t bring yourself to make that leap, the Highlander offers similar levels of seating (a third-row is optional), interior space and features that make it a great family hauler. Being a Toyota, it has the safety and reliability track record you would expect meaning it’s an affordable SUV that you can count on. Find a Toyota Highlander for sale
