7 Good Used Nissans Under $5,000 for 2020

If you’re on a really tight budget, you might find yourself thinking that there’s just no way you can afford a good used car. But automobiles have come a long way in the past couple of decades, and quality and reliability are no longer exclusive to brand-new vehicles. Nissan is one automaker that’s known for good dependability ratings, and here we’ve outlined seven used Nissans available for around $5,000.

2007-2012 Nissan Versa

2007-2012 Nissan Versa

Designed primarily with budget-conscious shoppers in mind, the Versa is one of the newest used Nissans you can find for around $5,000. Available in sedan and hatchback body styles, the Versa competes in the subcompact class with vehicles such as the Hyundai Accent, the Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Sonic. This means that buyers are getting a small, economical car ideal for running around town but less than ideal for highway travel and long road trips. Either way, with two different body styles to choose from, a used Versa offers buyers very basic transportation at a very basic price. Right now on Autotrader, there are more than 500 Versas listed from the 2007 to 2012 model years for around $5,000 or less, about 300 of which are hatchbacks. Buyers looking for something newer have around 200 2013-and-newer options as well, although all of these are sedans. Find a Nissan Versa for sale

2009-2014 Nissan Cube

2009-2014 Nissan Cube

If you’re after a vehicle that stands out in a crowd of basic hatchbacks and sedans, then consider a used Nissan Cube. The boxy Cube was offered from 2009 to 2014 and is similar in shape to the Scion xB and the Kia Soul. It’s loaded with quirky design elements, like an asymmetrical rear that features a traditional C-pillar on the driver’s side and a wraparound rear window on the passenger side. There’s also an oval-shaped piece of shag carpeting on the dashboard, a ripple effect on the headliner and speaker grilles and adjustable ambient interior lighting. Similar in form factor to the Versa hatchback, the Cube is best used as an urban vehicle, and under the hood is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine making 122 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. The Cube’s bold styling and quirky demeanor help it hold its value, and of the 200 or so Cubes listed for sale on Autotrader, fewer than 50 come in at or below the $5,000 mark. Find a Nissan Cube for sale

2007-2012 Nissan Sentra

2007-2012 Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra is a compact sedan competing with the likes of the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. Positioned between the Versa and Altima, the Sentra is efficient and economical while offering creature comforts like steering wheel-mounted controls, a sunroof and more. Powering the 2007-2012 Sentra is a range of 4-cylinder engines making up to 200 hp and paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission. Right now on Autotrader, there are more than 400 2007-2012 Sentras listed for around $5,000 or less. Find a Nissan Sentra for sale

2007-2012 Nissan Altima

2007-2012 Nissan Altima

The Altima is a mainstream midsize sedan in the same vein as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. Like other vehicles in Nissan’s lineup, the Altima represents a good value relative to its two main competitors. Buyers working with a budget of around $5,000 and looking at a used Altima should consider a fourth-generation model, which was sold from the 2007 model year to the 2012 model year. There are two engines to choose from: a basic 4-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 270 hp, which was segment-leading when it debuted. Right now on Autotrader, buyers have around 500 Altimas to choose from for around $5,000, about 40 of which come with the V6 engine. There are also about 40 Altima Coupes listed for under $5,000, and about 10 of those have the V6. Find a Nissan Altima for sale

2008-2013 Nissan Rogue

2008-2013 Nissan Rogue

The compact Rogue debuted for the 2008 model year and has become one of the top-selling vehicles in America. It’s powered by an economical 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT that prioritizes efficiency over everything else, helping early Rogues achieve a reasonably good fuel economy of around 24 miles per gallon in combined driving, even with all-wheel drive. The Rogue also earned good safety scores when it was first tested in 2008, which should only strengthen its appeal to prospective buyers. Sold between the 2008 and 2013 model years, the first-gen Rogue received an update for the 2011 model year. Right now on Autotrader, there are around 150 Rogues listed that would work for a buyer on a budget of about $5,000. Of these, around 50 are the updated 2011-2013 model. Find a Nissan Rogue for sale

1998-2005 Nissan Frontier

1998-2005 Nissan Frontier

The Frontier is a good value when it comes to midsize pickups. Largely unchanged since 2005, the current-generation Frontier is the oldest new vehicle on sale today. As a result, there are some older examples from as far back as 2005 currently selling on Autotrader for around $5,000 that look a lot like a new example that you can pick up at the Nissan dealer today for $30,000 or more. Still, many of the sub-$5,000 Frontiers you’ll encounter are less-desirable 2-wheel-drive or 4-cylinder models. As far as 4-wheel-drive, V6-equipped Frontiers go, there are only around 20 options listed from between the 1998 and 2012 model years. If you don’t need the extra capability, the price of a 4-cylinder or 2WD Frontier drops significantly, although the vehicle holds its value quite well. There are only around 100 used Frontiers listed on Autotrader for $5,000 or less. Find a Nissan Frontier for sale

1999-2002 Nissan XTerra

1999-2002 Nissan XTerra

The XTerra is a rugged, trucklike SUV that was sold from 1999 to 2015. Sharing its underpinnings with the Frontier pickup, the XTerra counted vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner and the Jeep Wrangler as its main competitors. It offered a solid rear axle and available low-range 4WD, making it appropriate for use off-road on rocky, uneven terrain. While vehicles like the Wrangler and 4Runner have long enjoyed strong reputations and cultlike followings, the XTerra never quite reached that level, and as Nissan opted to discontinue it after the 2015 model year, the XTerra has become yet another great value on the used car market. Right now on Autotrader, there are more than 250 used XTerras for $5,000 or less to choose from. More than half of them come with 4WD, while 15 are 4WD-equipped models from the Frontier’s second generation, which was introduced for 2008. Find a Nissan XTerra for sale
