For buyers with around $10,000 to spend on a vehicle, used wagons represent an exceptional value. With the space of an SUV, but in a more economical, more efficient package not unlike that which you get with a sedan, wagons offer the best of two different worlds. Additionally, as SUVs have become more and more popular over the past two decades, automakers have taken to ruggedizing their wagon offerings, meaning that many used wagons out there will come with all-wheel drive, not to mention other features that help to bridge the gap between SUVs and the sedans on which most wagons are based. Here we've outlined seven practical, efficient used wagons that can be found for around $10,000.

2010-2014 Subaru Outback

2010-2014 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has been one of the most popular wagons on the market for more than a decade now and it isn't hard to see why. Offering efficiency, practicality and the benefit of standard AWD, the Outback is perfect for everyone from college students to pet owners to weekend warriors. In addition to offering a long roof, the Outback comes with SUV like ride height. Many will be surprised to learn that an Outback has just as much ground clearance as a Jeep Grand Cherokee. While the Outback's chunky body cladding and silver chin piece -- designed to look like a skid plate -- are mostly for looks, the vehicle's standard roof-rails are actually hugely functional, as they hide crossbars that can be deployed for mounting bike racks or a roof-top cargo box, or stowed when needed to cut down on noise and wind resistance. There are currently over 250 2010-2014 Subaru Outbacks listed for around $10k or less on Autotrader. Two engines were offered: a basic 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a more potent 3.6-liter V6. Most of the $10,000 used Outbacks you'll find from the 2010-2014 era come with the 4-cylinder. Find a Subaru Outback for sale

2010-2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

2010-2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

While it's always been based on the Golf, Volkswagen's much-loved compact wagon was oddly known as the "Jetta Sportwagen" from the 2010 to 2014 model years. This is probably a good thing though, as the Golf from these years offered a near-luxury level of refinement that you didn't quite get from a Jetta from the same era. The 2010-2014 Sportwagen was offered with two different engines: a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder making 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque or a 2.0-liter turbodiesel making 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Obviously, Volkswagen was embroiled in a pretty serious emissions cheating scandal over the past few years, and you'll want to make sure any diesel-powered Sportwagen you're considering has had the mandated emissions fix completed. That said, it appears that most have been fixed, and of the hundreds of Sportwagens for sale on Autotrader, over 750 are diesel powered TDI models, which offer good low-end power and reasonable fuel economy, even after their emissions systems have been made compliant with federal regulations. A 5-speed manual was offered with either powerplant. In the gas model, the automatic transmission was a traditional 6-speed, while in the diesel it's Volkswagen's quick-shifting dual-clutch automatic, which the company refers to as the DSG. Find a Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen for sale

2009-2015 Toyota Venza

2009-2015 Toyota Venza

The Venza blends elements from the Camry midsize sedan and an SUV. In fact, the Venza shares a lot of components with the Lexus RX SUV. Sales of the Venza covered six model years from 2009 to 2015. Two engines were offered. Buyers had their choice of either a 182-hp 4-cylinder or a 268-hp 6-cylinder, either of which could be had with either front-wheel drive or AWD. Toyota updated the Venza for the 2013 model year, giving it modernized styling and an updated infotainment system. In addition to offering AWD and a car like driving experience, a used Venza will come with 36 cu ft. of storage space behind the second row, which grows to 70 cu ft. with the second row folded flat. Right now on Autotrader, there are just under 250 Venzas listed for around $10,000 or less, around 90 of which come with AWD. Find a Toyota Venza for sale

2010-2015 Honda Crosstour

2010-2015 Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour was offered from the 2010 to 2015 model years and was sold as the "Accord Crosstour" for 2010 and 2011. The Crosstour blends sedan, wagon, hatchback and SUV characteristics, making for a very unique vehicle. Much like Toyota did with the Venza, to create the Crosstour, Honda took its midsize sedan, the Accord, and lengthened the roof to turn it into a long hatchback, raised the ride height, and gave it optional AWD. Find one with the V6 engine and you're looking at a healthy balance of horsepower and torque. A 5-speed automatic was offered through 2012 and was replaced by a 6-speed automatic as part of the Crosstour's 2013 update. Honda opted to make the Crosstour more SUV like for 2013 as well, adding a new grille and some plastic body-cladding for a rugged appearance. Right now on Autotrader, buyers looking for a $10,000 wagon have around 150 Crosstours to choose from. Most of these even come with the V6 engine, while around 60 have AWD. Given that the vehicle's name was changed part way through its lifecycle, remember to include both the "Crosstour" and the "Accord Crosstour" in your search. Find a Honda Crosstour for sale

2009-2014 Ford Flex

2009-2014 Ford Flex

The Flex is an underrated family wagon. Built on the same platform as the Explorer, the Flex came out in 2009 and wears a boxy, simplistic design that still looks fresh and unique to this day. Ford updated the Flex for the 2013 model year, giving it updated styling inside and out, and 2013-and-newer models look very similar to a Flex you'll find for sale new at your local Ford dealer today. The Flex seats up to seven people if you find one with a second-row bench seat, or six with second-row captain's chairs, which come on upper trims. The Flex is offered with some retro-inspired styling elements like some chrome styling bits and an available contrast-color roof. Overall, the Flex makes a great family-hauling wagon, and offers lots of space for both people and things. There are currently over 400 Flexes listed on Autotrader for around $10,000 or less, about 40 of which are updated 2013-and-newer models, 10 of which even have AWD. Find a Ford Flex for sale

2012-2017 Toyota Prius V

2012-2017 Toyota Prius V

If efficiency is what you're after, consider a used Prius V. A more spacious take on the standard Prius, the Prius V offers more cargo room, with 34 cu ft. behind the second row and 67 cu ft. with the second row folded. Like the regular Prius, the Prius V also offers respectable fuel economy relative to other vehicles of its size, with EPA ratings of 43 miles per gallon in the city, 39 mpg on the highway and 41 mpg in combined driving, allowing for 488 miles of range between fill-ups. While it won't win any races, nor should it earn you many points from the wagon enthusiast crowd, the Prius V is incredibly efficient, which will translate to less money spent at the pump. Keep in mind that during its heyday, the Prius V was popular among taxi fleets. Since taxis tend to be treated pretty poorly, we recommend steering well clear. Indicators that a Prius V was used as a taxi are abnormally high miles and, well, is a taxicab yellow exterior color. Find a Toyota Prius V for sale

2005-2008 Dodge Magnum

2005-2008 Dodge Magnum

The short-lived Dodge Magnum was built on the same platform as the Dodge Charger, the Dodge Challenger and the Chrysler 300. While most Magnums you find will be rear-wheel drive, AWD was optional on SXT and RT trims. Engines offered in the Magnum consisted of two V6s, a 5.7-liter V8, and in the high-performance SRT8 variant, a 6.1-liter V8 making 425 hp. While it didn't offer anything special in terms of design, quality or refinement, the Magnum is certainly unique as there are very few modern wagons out there that double as a muscle car, and even fewer that can be had for under $10,000. Right now on Autotrader, there are around 130 Magnums listed for $10,000 or less. Find a Dodge Magnum for sale
