Midsize crossovers and SUVs are great, but they sure can get expensive in the new market. Three-row SUVs can get more expensive than minivans, and even two-row models can reach luxury SUV pricing in their higher trims. If you like the idea of a roomy and family-friendly crossover but don’t quite have the budget for a new one, there are a lot of attractive midsize crossovers that can be had at affordable prices on the used market.
Here are seven great used midsize SUVs you can find on Autotrader for less than $20,000 for 2020.
2016-2019 Kia Sorento
The current-generation Kia Sorento, which kicked off in 2016, was affordable when it was new and is now an even better bargain on the used market. It’s a well-balanced crossover with available third-row seating and, overall, it’s an excellent value. The interior is nicer than you might expect from a Kia, and its excellent safety rating makes it good for families. It even has a surprising fun-to-drive factor, with agile handling and a brawny V6 engine and strong turbo four available under the hood. Find a Kia Sorento for sale
2011-2014 Porsche Cayenne
That’s right, it’s possible to get a modern Porsche Cayenne for less than $20,000, specifically early examples of the second-generation model. This Cayenne does a nice job being the Porsche of SUVs, with distinct Porsche aesthetics and a driving experience to match its name. Its handling is excellent and the interior is gorgeous, and it’s more practical than you might think. Third-row seating isn’t available, but you get standard all-wheel drive on every model, and it’s fairly roomy in the back seats and the cargo area. Find a Porsche Cayenne for sale
2015-2018 Ford Edge
The Ford Edge is a stylish choice in 2-row midsize crossovers, combining SUV practicality with an engaging driving experience. It’s also pretty luxurious, with an interior that is quiet and well-designed. Space in the back seat and cargo area are both good, making it good for families, so long as you don’t need a third row. You get a choice of three engines in the Edge: the base turbocharged 4-cylinder, a stronger, naturally aspirated V6 or a high-performance twin-turbo V6 in the Sport trim. There’s no bad engine in the Edge, so pick the one that suits your budget and your tastes. Find a Ford Edge for sale
2011-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
If you want a modern SUV with good road manners that’s also up for off-road adventures, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is really good both on the road and off it. The WK2 generation of the Grand Cherokee, which came out in 2011, was a big improvement over the previous generation, with a more refined interior, a smoother on-road ride and better off-road performance. For a 2-row midsize crossover that’s as at home in the school pickup line as it is on the trails, consider a Grand Cherokee. We definitely recommend 4-wheel drive for this one for added off-road chops. Find a Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale
2015-2018 Nissan Murano
The Nissan Murano has been one of our favorite 2-row midsize SUVs for a while for its luxury SUV-like interior and features without the luxury SUV price tag. It also has an interesting look that still doesn’t look quite like anything else on the road, even from Nissan‘s own lineup. The tech is user-friendly, the interior is spacious and airy and the handling is sportier than you might expect but still very smooth and calm in highway driving. It also scores well in safety and reliability, which is the icing on the cake. Find a Nissan Murano for sale
2013-2017 Chevrolet Traverse
The Chevrolet Traverse — along with the mechanically similar GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave — is a good family-friendly minivan alternative. With standard 3-row seating that actually has decent legroom in the third row and generous cargo space to boot, practicality is the name of the game in the Traverse. It’s also safe and reliable, as you’d expect from a Chevrolet, and its smooth ride quality makes it a great family road trip vehicle. Not only is it comfy on the highway, but it’s more maneuverable than you might expect a vehicle this size to be. Find a Chevrolet Traverse for sale
2014-2019 Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander just entered an all-new generation for 2020, and the outgoing generation is just starting to get under the $20,000 mark on the used market. This family-friendly SUV has three rows of seats, a ton of in-cabin storage space and good fuel economy. These qualities add up to one of the best minivan alternatives on the market for families who need 3-row seating. If you’re shopping for a Highlander, make sure you get the optional V6 instead of the underpowered base 4-cylinder engine. Find a Toyota Highlander for sale
