7 Great Used Toyotas Under $20,000 for 2019

Toyota builds a wide variety of vehicles, from the long-running Camry, to the top-selling RAV4, to the legendary Land Cruiser, to the Tacoma and Tundra pickups. Altogether, there’s a Toyota out there for just about anyone. Here, we’ll take a look at seven used Toyotas that are great for anyone working with a budget of around $20,000.

2016-2018 RAV4

2016-2018 Toyota RAV4

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling passenger vehicle in the United States in 2018. While an all-new model was introduced for 2019, buyers can find gently used examples of the outgoing model for well under $20,000, and there are currently over 1,000 2016-2018 RAV4s listed on Autotrader that would fit the bill. Over these model years, the RAV4 was offered as a hybrid as well, which returns a respectable 34 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, for only a small price premium over non-hybrid models. The RAV4 Hybrid has held its value quite well, though, and there are only a few listed for around $20,000. Still, even without this efficient powertrain, the RAV4 offers exceptional practicality, not to mention a great array of available active safety features and Toyota reliability. 2017-2018 Corolla

2017-2018 Toyota Corolla

Buyers just looking for basic, safe, reliable transportation might want to check out a gently used Corolla. A few things in particular make the Corolla a compelling compact sedan. First, the Corolla gained Toyota’s excellent suite of driver-assist features as standard starting in 2017. This means that every 2017 or 2018 Corolla you find — from the base model to the highest trim — will come with such features as lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking and radar cruise control. Additionally, buyers may be surprised to find that for these model years, the Corolla — considered a compact — offers very similar interior dimensions to the new-for-2018 Camry — which is considered a midsize sedan. Combine these two traits with the fact that every Corolla should return over 30 mpg in combined driving and this compact sedan becomes a compelling option for those wanting to simply get from point A to point B with as few surprises as possible. There are currently over 1,000 2017 and 2018 Corollas listed for sale on Autotrader for well under $20,00 — a few of which are even brand new. Find a Toyota Corolla for sale

2011-2013 Highlander

2011-2013 Toyota Highlander

The Highlander is Toyota’s midsize 3-row family hauling SUV. While a third-generation model was introduced for 2014 and is still on sale today, the second generation Highlander, sold from 2008-2013, has now depreciated down to the point where buyers can find one for around $20,000 with ease. The Highlander offers three rows of seats with room for either seven or eight passengers depending on whether there’s a second row bench seat or captains chairs. The second-gen Highlander was offered with either a 4- or 6-cylinder engine, along with a V6 hybrid variant that returns an impressive 28 mpg in both city and highway driving while still making 245 horsepower. There are currently 940 2011-2013 Highlanders listed on Autotrader for $20,000 or less. While we recommend the hybrid model for its great fuel economy, only 30 of the 940 Highlanders listed are hybrids. Find a Toyota Highlander for sale

2018-2019 Camry

2018-2019 Toyota Camry

Few sedans offer a better overall package than the Camry, and it isn’t hard for buyers to find a very new 2018 or 2019 model for under $20,000, with over 1,000 currently listed on Autotrader. Four-cylinder, V6 and hybrid models are all available, although buyers are primarily limited to 4-cylinder models at the $20,000 price point. While we recommend prioritizing the newness of a 2018 or 2019 model for its standard active safety features, buyers wanting a V6 or a hybrid can look to a 2014 to 2017 model. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 500 2014 to 2017 Camry Hybrids and 300 V6 models offered for $20,000 or less. Find a Toyota Camry for sale

2011-2016 Sienna

2011-2016 Toyota Sienna

If you have a family to haul around, it’s hard to beat a minivan, and the Sienna has long been a formidable player in the segment. Luckily for those with a budget of around $20,000, the Sienna sold new today has been around since 2011, meaning that a used Sienna will still be remarkably similar to a brand new one. The Sienna can be configured to seat either seven or eight people. The second row is removable, while the third row can easily be folded in to the cargo floor when not in use. While a 4-cylinder Sienna was offered for the 2011 and 2012 model years, we recommend the V6, which was optional in 2011 and 2012 and standard thereafter. Additionally, the Sienna is the only minivan sold over the past few years to offer available all-wheel drive. Right now on Autotrader, there tons of 2011 or newer Siennas for sale with the V6 engine for under $20,000. Buyers looking for an AWD example have 250 to choose from at this price point. 2009-2015 Tacoma

2009-2015 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has been the most popular midsize pickup on the market for years now and buyers with a budget of $20,000 have plenty of used examples to choose from, as there are currently over 900 2009-2015 model year examples to choose from on Autotrader that fit this price point. The Tacoma offers great reliability, which in turn leads to the great resale value you often see with used Toyotas, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, Tacoma buyers should see extremely slow depreciation on their trucks, but on the other, it’s hard to find a cheap used example without going back several model years. For context — there are only 84 2016 or newer Tacomas available on Autotrader for under $20k, many of which are either damaged or 2-wheel drive models. As with most pickups, the Tacoma offers a some configurability with regard to cab and bed size, and can be had with two different engine options and either rear- or 4-wheel drive. Filtering to show only Tacomas in what is arguably the most desirable configuration — the V6 engine paired with 4WD — that 900 figure drops down to around 500, which is still plenty to choose from. 2016-2018 Toyota Prius

2016-2018 Toyota Prius

Buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency above all else are probably giving strong consideration to a Prius. Perhaps surprisingly, despite offering huge benefits with regard to fuel economy, a used Prius from the vehicle’s current generation isn’t hard to find for around $20,000 or less, with over 600 options listed on Autotrader. Buyers can choose between the regular Prius, which achieves 54 mpg city/50 mpg hwy/52 mpg combined, or the even-more-efficient Prius Eco, which returns 58 mpg city/53 mpg hwy/56 mpg combined. During these model years, the Prius followed a unique numeric trim level structure. At the entry level was the Prius. Regardless of which one you end up with, the Prius makes for a supremely efficient vehicle. Additionally, while it’s still a compact sedan, the Prius’ rear hatchback opening makes loading and unloading large items a breeze, and you may wind up surprised with how much fits inside. Additionally, the 2016 and newer Prius is available with Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of active safety features as either optional or standard on later models, which should not only contribute to your peace of mind, but also to the vehicle’s resale value down the road.
